The Telangana government on Wednesday, 16 November, sanctioned ₹1,571 crore for the expansion of the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad.
The government proposed 2,000 oxygen beds for the hospital, out of which, as many as 500 beds are expected to be in ICU.
At present, the hospital at NIMS has a total of 1,800 beds.
“Government after careful examination of the proposal, hereby accord administrative sanction to Director, NIMS, Hyderabad for an amount of Rs.1,571 towards ‘NIMS expansion project’ [sic],” reads the government order.
The expansion is expected to bring up a total of 42 departments, which include heart, kidney, brain, liver, cancer, emergency, trauma, and orthopaedic specialities, which would provide super-speciality care.

The expansion would also reportedly increase the number of super-speciality medical seats for postgraduate students in the hospital.
It was learned that additional facilities, specialities, departments, and infrastructure, which are currently not found on the premises, would be added to the new building.
The expansion is also expected to help in super-speciality nursing and allied health sciences training.
Currently, there are over 30 essential departments in the hospital along with academics, investigation, and research.
The construction of the new buildings is expected to be done at the government quarters available in the Punjagutta colony.
State plans 10,000 super-speciality beds
The Health Department in a statement said that the government was stepping towards setting up 10,000 super-speciality beds in the state.
“With the addition of 2,000 beds in NIMS, the total bed capacity in the hospital will become 3,800,” said the health department.
“There will be four Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences hospitals in the periphery of the city with 4,000 beds and a new super-speciality hospital in Warangal will have 2,000 beds, which will eventually y bring the number of super-speciality beds to around 10,000,” he added.
