The Cyberabad police on Monday, 5 August, suspended the Detective Inspector and five other constables as part of the departmental action, in the case of the alleged torture of a Dalit woman on 24 July in the Shadnagar Police Station.

A Dalit woman has alleged that she was tortured by cops at Shadnagar police station. The woman, it is claimed, was called to the police station over allegations of gold theft and then allegedly assaulted in the presence of her minor son.

While talking to reporters, the woman claimed that her husband was beaten up first and then released. She was then forced to remove her sari and wear shorts. The police personnel tied her hands and legs before assaulting her. Despite her pleas, the woman stated that she was not spared.

Commissioner Of Police, IPS Avinash Mohanty in a press release stated that further departmental action will follow.

While the incident happened on 24 July, it came to light on 4 August. Narrating the horrifying incident, the woman stated the police officers hit her from 9 pm to 2 am. She further reiterated that she was not involved in the theft in any way.

CM assures justice, Opposition questions the government

Responding to the incident, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy ordered the inquiry and assured the victims that justice would be served. Revanth Reddy said that none of those responsible for the incident can escape.

Meanwhile, BRS leaders KTR and Harish Rao criticised the government for the violation of human rights.

Tagging the chief minister and state DGP on X, Siddipet MLA Harish Rao wrote on Monday, ” This horrific abuse of power reflects a disturbing trend of police brutality under your (chief minister) watch. No remand has been filed, making this detention illegal and unjust. How long will this government allow such blatant violations of human rights.? Immediate action is needed to restore justice.”

KTR further called out Revanth Reddy for humiliating women, saying “The chief minister is insulting the women himself, naturally the police are acting similarly.”

“Is this the rule of Indiramma? Is this democracy,” asked the BRS leader, and alleged that the Congress government is “anti-dalit and anti-women.”

He demanded that a case of SC and ST atrocity be registered against the police personnel involved.
