Sai Charan Nakka, a 25-year-old environmental engineer from Nalgonda in Telangana, was reportedly shot dead in the Maryland state of the US on 19 June.
According to the US media reports, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police received information about a car crash on southbound Interstate 95 near the Caton Avenue exit at 4.35 am that day.
At the spot, the officers found Nakka had sustained several injuries, including a possible gunshot to the head.
The police rushed him to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Centre, where the doctors declared him dead on arrival at 6.30 am.
The doctors confirmed that he had a gunshot wound on his head.
The Baltimore police have launched a homicide investigation following his death.
They have appealed to the locals to provide information if they witnessed any suspicious activity around the time of the incident.
Nakka’s parents in India received news of his death two days after the incident, on 21 June, and that too through their relatives living in the US.
The parents have appealed to the Indian and Telangana governments to help them bring their son’s body back home.
Nakka, the son of a retired school headmaster, went to the US for postgraduation four years ago.
He was returning home after dropping a friend at the airport when the incident is said to have taken place.
After completing a Master of Engineering (Environmental Health) from the University of Cincinnati, he joined an engineering consulting firm in Baltimore and has lived there since 2020.
His sister is currently living in the US.
