Synopsis: Koppula Raju said the initial campaign Rahul Gandhi launched during his 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra has since grown into a full-fledged movement. He credited Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the Telangana Congress government with turning Telangana into a role model for the country through its scientific caste survey.
The Indian National Congress in Telangana will launch a 100-day statewide campaign demanding an immediate nationwide caste census and the scrapping of the 50% cap on reservations, Congress Working Committee invitee Koppula Raju announced on Saturday, 6 September.
Raju said the initial campaign started by Rahul Gandhi during his 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra has since grown into a full-fledged movement. He credited Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the Telangana Congress government with turning Telangana into a role model for the country through its scientific caste survey.
Raju said the 100-day campaign would carry the OBC rights demand to every corner of Telangana, building on the momentum of the caste survey.
He said the party would also campaign to remove the 50% reservation cap imposed by the Supreme Court.
The state’s Socio-Economic, Education, Employment, Political, and Caste (SEEEPC) survey, rolled out in November 2024 after a legislative resolution, covered over 3.5 crore residents. The state marks 4 February, the survey’s launch date, as “Social Justice Day” each year.
Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly held the Telangana exercise as a blueprint for a national caste census.
BRS leaders, however, have accused the Congress of announcing quotas without matching legislative follow-through, particularly on the 42 per cent OBC reservation in local body polls.
