TPCC senior vice-president and former MP Mallu Ravi said a fresh date for the public meeting would be announced soon.
A public meeting to be attended by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Telangana on 20 July, where former minister Jupally Krishna Rao was scheduled to join the party, has been postponed due to the forecast of heavy rains.
The meeting was scheduled to be held at Kollapur near Mahabubnagar, about 160 km from Hyderabad.
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) senior vice-president and former MP Mallu Ravi on Tuesday, 18 July, said a fresh date for the public meeting would be announced soon.
Ahead of joining the national party, Krishna Rao called on Congress Legislative Party leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka in Hyderabad on 10 July, and discussed the strategy to be followed to impart further impetus to the party, which is on the upswing in Telangana.
After their meeting, Vikramarka told reporters that the Congress is not trying to poach leaders from other parties.
“They are showing interest in joining the party for various reasons. The main reason propelling them is the credibility of the party and its commitment to fulfilling the objectives for which the people had fought and secured a separate state,” he said.
Vikramraka said that leaders from both the BRS and the BJP were showing interest in joining the Congress and the process has already begun of admitting them into the party.
There are several BRS and BJP leaders who are ready to join the Congress as they now know that the two parties are two sides of the same coin, he said adding that they did not want to be fooled by their antics any longer.
Krishna Rao said that leaders from both parties in the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district will join the party.
“They will include BRS MLC K Damodar Reddy and his son Megha Reddy.”
On 2 July, addressing a mammoth public meeting in Khammam after admitting former MP and suspended BRS leader Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and his supporters into the party fold, Rahul Gandhi announced welfare schemes for Telangana, if the party was elected to power in the upcoming state elections.
Srinivas Reddy and Jupally Krishna Rao announced their decision in June to join the Congress.
Buoyed by its victory in neighbouring Karnataka, Congress hopes to assume power in Telangana, defeating the ruling BRS and the BJP in the Legislative Assembly polls scheduled to be held in a few months.
