Telangana Congress MLAs

Intent on making BRS taste its own medicine, the Congress on Friday, 6 January, lodged a complaint with Moinabad police station alleging that the BRS had poached its 12 MLAs in 2019 with offers of positions of power and other inducements.

After lodging the complaint, Telangana Congress president A Revanth Reddy said, “We want the CBI to conduct an inquiry into the poaching of our MLAs and take necessary action. Since the recent case of Cash for MLAs has been transferred to the CBI, let the central investigation agency look into our complaint as well,” he said.

The Congress has made up its mind a few days ago to seek prosecution of the turncoat MLAs. The Telangana Congress said that BRS, which is crying foul over the BJP trying to poach its MLAs, is itself guilty of spiriting away its 12 MLAs after KCR came to power in 2018.

The most ironic part of the Cash for MLAs case was that of the four BRS MLAs that the BJP had allegedly tried to poach, three were the ones whom BRS had poached from the Congress.

The main complainant to the police — who claimed the BJP had tried to poach him and three other BRS MLAs — was Pilot Rohith Reddy who himself had defected to the BRS along with others in 2019.

Congress’s decision in the wake of CBI probe

The Telangana Congress, which had been gunning for the 12 MLAs for dumping it for the BRS, had increased the pressure on them in the wake of the Telangana High Court transferring the Cash of MLAs case to the CBI. This was on petitions filed by the BJP and the three accused in the case.

On Friday, Revanth Reddy met with Congress Legislature Party leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and other senior leaders and, after discussing their plan to lodge a complaint against the 12 former Congress MLAs, went to the Moinabad Police Station.

Since the FIR related to the Cash of MLAs case was issued at this station, the Congress leaders felt it appropriate to lodge a complaint at the same police station.

Revanth Reddy later said that since the Cash for MLAs case has been transferred to the CBI, the Telangana Congress wanted their complaint also investigated by the CBI as the FIR for Cash for MLAs case was transferred to the central investigation agency.

Revanth Reddy said that he would lodge similar complaints with the CBI, Enforcement Directorate and the Telangana Director General of Police.

“If the investigation agencies do not respond, we would take legal recourse. If no action follows, the party would not hesitate to bring pressure by organising agitations,” he said.

The 12 Congress MLAs who switched sides in 2019 were P Sabita Indra Reddy (Mahesawram) who is now Education Minister, Rega Kantha Rao (Pinapaka), Pilot Rohit Reddy (Vikarabad), B Harshavardhan Reddy (Kollapur), Hari Priya Naik (Yellendu), Athram Sakku (Asifabad), Kandala Upender Reddy (Palair), D Sudheer Reddy (LB Nagar), Chirumarti Lingaiah (Nakrekal), Jajula Surender (Yellareddy), Vanama Venkateswara Rao (Kothagudem) and Gandra Venkataramana Reddy (Bhupalpalle).

They joined the TRS en masse in June 2019 and the Assembly Speaker allowed it, recognising their action as a merger because they constituted two-thirds of the Congress strength in the Assembly as per the amendment made to the Anti-Defection Act.
