Telangana CM Revanth Reddy gears up for cabinet expansion

The air is thick with the expectation that the expansion of Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s Cabinet might take place anytime.

Lending credence to the excitement was Revanth Reddy’s two-hour long meeting with Governor in-charge of Telangana CP Radhakrishnan in Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad on Monday, 1 July. The chief minister drove to Raj Bhavan, where he was closeted with the Governor, and he is understood to have had his lunch there as well.

In his meeting, the chief minister reportedly gave him a broad outline of the expansion of the cabinet. Six berths are lying vacant in his Cabinet and there has been pressure on him for quite some time to fill them.

Cabinet reshuffle, speculations

As the chief minister’s tete-e-tete with the Governor took place after his long deliberations with the Congress top brass in his recent visit to Delhi, the speculation is rife that the main subject of discussion was only the expansion of the Cabinet.

The chief minister also raised the issue of filling berths in the council under the Governor’s quota and discussed Bills that the government intends to introduce in the forthcoming Assembly session, which is yet to be notified.

There is a buzz that Revanth Reddy may have to rope in Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy into the cabinet.

It was a promise made to him in return for his help in ensuring the victory of Congress candidate Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy from the Bhongir Lok Sabha seat, which he eventually won.

As Bhongir is the Lok Sabha constituency which Rajagopal Reddy had represented in the past, he used his contact and helped Kiran Kumar Reddy win the seat despite the fact that he was Revanth Reddy’s protege.

There is also a buzz that Revanth Reddy might take Danam Nagender into his Cabinet, though he won the Assembly election from Khairatabad on a BRS ticket and joined the Congress after it came to power. He contested in the Lok Sabha elections from Secunderabad on Congress ticket unsuccessfully.

As quite a few portfolios are still with Revanth Reddy, he is understood to have decided to reshuffle some of them among the existing ministers and allot some to the newcomers. He has with him, among others, Home, Municipal Administration, and Education.
