On Saturday, 9 December, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy handed over a cheque for ₹2 crore to boxing world champion Nikhat Zareen on the premises of the Assembly.
He awarded the money as financial assistance to her to train for the Paris Olympics 2024, and wished that she would bring name and fame for Telangana with her achievements in the sport of boxing.
She hails from Nizamabad.
Zareen was present at the event where Reddy launched two of the six poll guarantees by the Congress — Rajiv Arogya Shri and Mahalakshmi scheme. She travelled for free on an TSRTC bus as part of the launch.
Zareen’s initiation into the world of boxing was guided by her father, Mohammad Jameel Ahmed, who served as her trainer for a year.
Meanwhile, she found herself under the mentorship of Dronacharya awardee IV Rao at the Sports Authority of India in Visakhapatnam in 2009.
A notable milestone in Zareen’s early career was her recognition as the “golden best boxer” at the Erode Nationals in 2010, just a year after joining the training programme.
Zareen is a two-time world champion. She won a gold medal at the 2011 AIBA Women’s Youth & Junior World Boxing Championships held in Antalya, Turkey.
Zareen won gold medals at the 2022 Istanbul and 2023 New Delhi IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
She also won gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. She won the bronze medal in the light flyweight event in the 2022 Asian Games.
