Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday, 21 October, said all vacant posts in the state police department would be filled by 2028. He also announced higher ex-gratia payments for the families of personnel killed in the line of duty.

The chief minister was addressing the Police Commemoration Parade at the Police Martyrs Memorial in Goshamahal, Hyderabad. The day is observed every year on 21 October to honour police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Telangana State Police Recruitment Board had already issued a recruitment notification for 7,437 posts. However, several aspirants from across the state have been demanding that the department add more posts, as it reportedly has close to 20,000 vacancies. The latest announcement comes after months of protests by the aspirants.

CM Revanth said the government aimed to strengthen the state’s police force and directed the department to fill all vacancies by 2028. The CM described the recruitment of 112 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) as unprecedented in the state’s history. He also said transgender persons were being appointed as traffic assistants.

Revanth directed Director General of Police C.V. Anand to increase the ex-gratia payment for the families of Home Guards who die while on duty from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

He also announced revised payouts for other ranks. The families of Superintendents of Police and IPS officers will now receive Rs 2 crore, up from the earlier amount of Rs 1 crore. The families of officers ranging from Head Constables to Additional Superintendents of Police (SPs) will receive between Rs 1 crore and Rs 1.5 crore, compared with the Rs 45 lakh they received earlier.

Reddy said the increase was not merely financial assistance but “a gesture of respect” towards the families of the martyrs.

Reddy asked the police to deal with cases involving women and children with greater sensitivity and ensure that justice for victims was not delayed. He added that women’s safety was not the responsibility of the police alone and that every individual in society had a role to play.

He also highlighted important initiatives undertaken by the government, including SHE Teams, the ‘Stand With Her’ campaign, Spandana immediate protection teams for women and children in emergencies, and the Young India Police School for the children of police personnel.

Voicing concern over drug abuse, he urged the police to prevent young people from falling prey to addiction and commended the EAGLE FORCE for its efforts to combat drug trafficking.
