Synopsis: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy met Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil on Tuesday and sought Central approvals for the Tummidihatti barrage and other pending irrigation projects. He urged the Centre to facilitate an agreement with Maharashtra on Tummidihatti at an FRL of 152 metres, and sought clearances for four projects as well as an early review of the Sammakka Sagar project.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday, 29 September met Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil and urged him to help the state move ahead with several irrigation projects that are awaiting Central approvals, especially the proposed Tummidihetti barrage.
Reddy was accompanied by Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, SHAKTI and Mines & Geology Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy, and MP Gaddam Vamsi Krishna.
On Tummidihatti, the chief minister said Telangana had already sent its proposal to the Maharashtra government. He urged the Centre to facilitate talks between the two states so that an agreement could be signed without further delay, noting that the wait had already held up progress.
Reddy sought a full reservoir level (FRL) of 152 metres as the height would let water flow to the Yellampalli project, cutting both power consumption and pumping costs.
Environmental clearances formed another major part of the discussion. Reddy urged the Centre to approve the Palamuru-Rangareddy and Dindi lift irrigation schemes, the Sitamma Sagar multipurpose project and the Gauravelli reservoir. He pointed to the Centre’s recently revised EC guidelines, issued after a Supreme Court ruling, and warned that prolonged waiting was pushing up construction costs.
He also asked Patil to expedite the Central Water Commission’s review of the Sammakka Sagar project. Telangana has already submitted its detailed project report, and the state is seeking approval of the irrigation plan and inter-state aspects. Reddy added that talks with Chhattisgarh for a no-objection certificate were under way.
The two leaders also discussed the installation of telemetry systems to track Krishna water use. Reddy said Telangana had already paid ₹4.15 crore to Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) for the first phase and requested for swift implementation of the next two phases.
