Synopsis: The Telangana Congress Legislature Party met in Hyderabad on Thursday to strategise for upcoming local body elections, with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy emphasizing party image-building in light of recent caste census initiatives. The meeting also included discussions on, state finances, and the controversy surrounding an alleged secret meeting of 10 MLAs at a farmhouse.
The Telangana Congress Legislature Party (CLP) met in Hyderabad on Thursday, 6 February, to discuss the party’s preparedness for the upcoming local body elections.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy emphasised the need for the party cadres to build a bright image for the party in the wake of the government tabling the caste census in the Assembly and effecting sub-categorisation of the SCs.
The meeting was held at the Dr Marri Chenna Reddy Human Resource Development Institute of Telangana (MCRHRDI).
Other key leaders present at the meeting included Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, All India Congress Committee in-charge for Telangana Deepadas Munshi, and Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President B Mahesh Kumar Goud.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Goud asserted that its main focus was on the forthcoming local body elections. “We have discussed strategies for local body elections and on how to leverage politically the welfare schemes being implemented by the government. The MLAs too shared their opinion on the preparedness of the cadres in facing the elections,” he added.
Slamming the Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) for misleading the public on the caste census, Goud said that the meeting stressed the need for the party leaders to counter the propaganda. “At the meeting, suggestions were also taken for the formation of the executive for the TPCC,” he added.
The meeting also included a detailed presentation on the state’s revenue, debts, and expenditure. Goud announced that two mega-public meetings would be held in February. “We are planning to invite the top leaders of the party high command. We are leaving for Delhi for this purpose,” he said.
Though Goud was nominated as the TPCC President in September 2024, a new party executive has not yet been appointed. He has been trying to put together an effective team and get the party high command approval but thus far hasn’t been successful with the party being preoccupied with various other issues.
He has already conducted reviews with leaders from three districts immediately after taking over. He had earlier also made a new arrangement where the party workers and members of the general public could interact with ministers at Gandhi Bhavan, party headquarters, on appointed days and get their grievances rectified. The initiative has earned him accolades.
Meanwhile, after the meeting, Jadcherla Congress MLA Janampally Anirudh Reddy asserted that there was no secret agenda for the meeting he had earlier organised in a farmhouse on the outskirts of Hyderabad and that they had no issues against any minister.
There were unconfirmed reports that a secret meeting of 10 MLAs was held by Reddy at the farmhouse, where they expressed their displeasure over a minister demanding a cut from contractors for clearing bills for the works in their constituencies.
He said he would swear on his only son that nothing happened at the meeting. “Who told you that it was a secret meeting? I have no issues with any minister. No such discussions took place,” he said.
According to sources, the secret meeting was also discussed at the CLP meeting. The MLAs in question reportedly clarified that they met for dinner and it was a friendly meeting. The Chief Minister reportedly advised them that if they have any issues, they should bring them to the notice of the PCC President or himself.
