Telangana braces for more rain, CM reviews preparedness

India Meteorological Department predicted likely heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of Telangana on Saturday.

The police have warned of possible waterlogging that might affect vehicular traffic.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy held a meeting with senior government officials on Friday, 26 September, even as the India Meteorological Department predicted likely heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of Telangana on Saturday.

Reddy directed the officials concerned to remain alert, monitor low-lying areas, and address waterlogging to avoid major disruptions. The chief minister emphasised the need for preventive measures to ease traffic problems in Hyderabad and asked GHMC, HMWSSB, NDRF, and SDRF teams to be prepared.

He also instructed the chief secretary to coordinate with officials to ensure timely action as and when required. Meanwhile, the inauguration of the revived Bathukamma Kunta has been postponed to Sunday, 28 September, due to the inclement weather.

GHMC’s preventive evacuation

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) evacuated 55 residents from flood-prone areas under Shivaji Bridge and near Bhoo Laxmi Temple after the gates of Himayatsagar and Osmansagar were lifted.

The displaced families were shifted to Gode-ki-Khabar community hall, where shelter, food, and medical aid were arranged. Officials remained on high alert as heavy inflows continue.

Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar

On Friday, 10,000 cusecs of water was discharged from Himayat Sagar, and 11,000 cusecs from Osman Sagar. An expected 21,000 cusecs was discharged into the Musi River. As many as 11 gates of the Osman Sagar Reservoir have been lifted to seven feet. The reservoir has a present water level of 1789.4 ft against its capacity of 1790 ft.

Authorities have advised residents downstream to stay alert and follow instructions from local authorities.

Traffic snarls 

The following are locations where the Hyderabad and Cyberabad Traffic Police have warned of waterlogging after heavy overnight and morning rains.

Musi River overflowed at Jiyaguda, Ayodhya Junction, Panjagutta Flyover, Malakpet Railway Under Bridge, Taranagar Market, Manchirevula Road, TGPA Service Road, ORR Service Road Exit 18, Gangaram, HCU, Doyens Colony, Heritage Junction, Miyapur X Roads, Wipro Junction, near Cyber Towers, among others.
