Taking a cue from their rival parties — the BRS and the Congress — the Telangana BJP has intensified its efforts to finalise the candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Realising that it would send the wrong message to the party cadres if it continues to delay the process of finalising the list, the state leadership has expedited the course of action to announce candidates for at least 25 Assembly constituencies where there is no stiff competition among the candidates.

Election campaigning to start soon

Sources said that the party has also given enough indications to these 25 candidates to start their election campaign in their respective constituencies, as their candidature is almost finalised.

The list of candidates for the 25 constituencies would be announced at the earliest, after consulting the party high command in New Delhi.

The names of the sitting MPs, MLAs, former MLAs, and those who contested the Assembly elections in 2018 and lost by a slim margin might figure in the list comprising 25 contestants.

The state leaders were of the opinion that the high command might not raise any objection to announcing the first list with 25 candidates where there is no competition among the leaders.

Parties finalising tickets

The state BJP leaders said that the pace at which both the BRS and the Congress were gearing up for the elections prompted them to intensify their efforts to finalise the list in the first phase.

While the ruling BRS has already announced a list of 115 candidates a few days ago, the Congress has completed the process of receiving applications for all the 119 Assembly constituencies in the state.

The task of the Congress to finalise the appropriate candidates became more difficult as the party received more than 1,000 applications for 119 constituencies.

Meanwhile, the BJP received 178 applications on 5 September as against 182 on the first day — 4 September.

Sources said that the party is expected to receive more applications by 10 September, which is the last day. Senior leaders will visit each constituency to collect feedback from the cadres before finalising the names of the candidates.
