Synopsis: In a case of suspected caste killing, a 20-year-old BTech student succumbed to injuries allegedly inflicted by his girlfriend’s family in Ameenpur in the Sangareddy district of Telangana. According to police, he had been in a relationship with a fellow student for quite some time.

In a horrific case of suspected caste killing, a 20-year-old BTech student died on Wednesday, 10 December, succumbing to injuries allegedly inflicted by his girlfriend’s family in Ameenpur in the Sangareddy district of Telangana the previous night.

The victim, identified as Jyothi Shravan Sai, had been in a long-term relationship with the girl. The assault is believed to have been on account of her family’s opposition to their relationship. Shravan Sai belonged to a forward caste, while the girl belonged to a BC caste.

Neither family approved of their relationship and had repeatedly urged the couple to end it.

The incident

According to police, Shravan Sai, a second-year B.Tech student at St. Peter’s College, Maisammaguda, Medchal–Malkajgiri district, had been living in a rented room in Quthbullapur. He had been in a relationship with Srija (19), a fellow student from the same college, for quite some time.

Srija, a native of Beeramguda Isukabavi in Sangareddy district, had reportedly been planning to marry Shravan, but her family strongly objected and had earlier filed a complaint against him.

On 9 December, Srija’s family allegedly lured Shravan to their home under the pretext of discussing the proposed marriage. After his arrival, they allegedly assaulted him with bats, including a cricket bat, causing grievous injuries. Shravan succumbed the following morning while being rushed to a hospital by the girl’s family after his condition deteriorated.

Srija was reportedly present during the assault and is said to have pleaded with her parents to stop, insisting she loved Shravan. Her appeals, however, fell on deaf ears. The girl’s mother later admitted to police that they had beaten Shravan.

Ameenpur police have registered a case based on a complaint from Shravan’s family, who alleged that he had been tortured throughout the night. The investigation is in progress, with police examining the crime scene and verifying the sequence of events. No arrests have been made so far.
