As one approached the Nandi Nagar Road in Banjara Hills on the morning of Sunday, 11 December, a fortress of pink banners and hoardings could be seen across both sides of the road.

After all, Telangana MLC K Kavitha was facing officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at her Hyderabad residence.

While recording her statement in connection with the Delhi liquor scam case, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister and BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao put up a brave face.

As she fielded the Central probe agency’s barrage of questions on her own, there was no dearth of BRS supporters, who gathered in front of her house as early as 10 am and remained till the end.

The atmosphere outside the Banjara Hills residence of K Kavitha was otherwise subdued, with police barricades extending to around 500-600 metres on both sides of the entrance.

The security cover would let in only government officials, the kin of K Kavitha, and people whose houses fell within the barricaded area.

There was heavy police deployment from the Telangana government all over, with at least 40-50 personnel spotted in the area.

After seven and a half hours of questioning, the CBI officials left around 6:30 pm.

As they left, the BRS cadres assembled in front of Kavitha’s house and raised slogans of “Jai Kavithakka”, “Jai KCR”, and “Jai Telangana”.

‘Daughter of fighter will never fear’

Not just the Nandi Nagar road, the streets leading to Kavitha’s house were lined with posters backing her.

Put up by local leaders, they read “Daughter of Fighter (referring to KCR) will never fear” and “We are with Kavitha akka“.

Around 10.50 am, two CBI Innova vehicles arrived with more than 10 officials, including a few women officers, arrived at the house.

In a signal that the CBI officials were about to leave, the police started removing barricades around 2:30 pm. The journalists got on their toes after momentarily.

But to their dismay, the police put the barricades back in place once they got word from inside that the questioning had not ended.

Meanwhile, BRS leaders shared their opinions with reporters.

BRS MLA Guvvala Balaraju was of the view that the CBI visit in the Delhi liquor scam case was a “political attack” by the BJP-led Union government.

“The entire country is discussing this political attack. The CBI, ED, and other institutions are working under the Central government. It’s their duty to use them in a proper way but the Modi government is utilising them for their political aspirations. They want to demolish governments elected by the people,” he told South First.

While mentioning that K Kavitha cooperated with CBI at every step, he added, “The CBI can take the information from her, but if it tries to threaten her, all of us will stand behind our sister Kavitha.”

The Delhi liquor scam case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) mentioned Kavitha’s name in the remand report of one of the accused in the Delhi Liquor scam case, Amit Arora. After this, the CBI on 2 December served a notice on her to appear.

The notice was served on her under Section 160 of the CrPC for the investigation of the case RC 53 (A) 2022 of CBI/ACB/Delhi. Under this notice, she would have to appear before the CBI as a witness in the case and record her statement.

Earlier, the CBI registered a case against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia and 14 others regarding the allegations about Delhi’s 2021-22 excise policy based on the written complaint received from Praveen Kumar Rai, a Director at the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, dated 22 July.
