The bus hit the stationary container truck from behind, and the impact was severe.
Six people were killed, and at least 20 were injured when a private bus rammed into a stationary lorry in Telangana’s Suryapet district on Wednesday, August 26.
The deceased include five women.
According to police, the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday near Dwarakunta in Kodad mandal on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada national highway (NH-65). The bus, carrying around 42 passengers, was coming from Hyderabad and travelling towards Eluru in Andhra Pradesh.
The bus hit the stationary container truck from behind, and the impact was severe, resulting in the death of six passengers on the spot. At least 20 people sustained serious injuries, while four of them are in critical condition, police said.
The passengers were pulled out of the severely damaged vehicles by locals and emergency teams that arrived at the spot shortly after the incident.
The injured have been shifted to the Kodad Government Hospital for treatment.
Police suspect that speeding may have contributed to the collision, based on the impact on the stationary truck and the bus. The exact cause of the collision is yet to be ascertained.
Police have registered a case and launched a search for the bus driver and cleaner, who reportedly fled the scene after the accident.
The incident prompted a response from Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, who expressed shock and grief over the deaths.
In a statement, the Chief Minister conveyed his condolences to the families of those killed and directed Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju to ensure that the injured receive the best possible medical treatment.
The accident comes as authorities continue to focus on road safety and the risks posed by stationary heavy vehicles on highways, particularly at night and in the early morning.
