Security forces launch major offensive near Telangana border, five Maoists killed

Synopsis: Five Maoists were killed in an exchange of fire during Operation Kagar in Chhattisgarh’s Karreguttalu forests near the Telangana border. Security forces seized arms and literature; no personnel casualties were reported as combing operations with CRPF, COBRA, Greyhounds, and DRG continue.

Five Maoists were reportedly killed in an exchange of fire, with the possibility of the toll rising as Operation Kagar continues in the thick jungles of the Karreguttalu area in Chhattisgarh, close to Telangana border.

The combing, as part of Operation Kagar, was going on after receipt of intelligence inputs that senior Maoist leaders Devji and Bade Chokkarao were hiding in the area.

The identity of those slain has not yet been established.

The operation began on the night of 18 February during combing of the jungle. The encounter erupted around dawn on 19 February, when Maoists are suspected to have ambushed security forces.

A huge contingent of security forces is involved in the combing. They comprise personnel from the CRPF, Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA), Greyhounds (Telangana’s elite anti-Maoist unit), and District Reserve Guard (DRG).

Security forces seized arms and revolutionary literature from the encounter site; no casualties were reported among the security personnel.
