A court in LB Nagar on Wednesday, 28 September, sentenced bus driver Lakumarapu Harshavardhan to three years of rigorous imprisonment after convicting him for harassing a 16-year-old girl in the name of love.

Apart from the quantum of punishment, Judge Harisha also imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on the convict, after holding him guilty under Sections 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The 21-year-old Harshavardhan was a resident of Mohan Nagar in Kothapet in the RangaReddy district, on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The case dates back to 17 May 2018, when the Vanasthalipuram police registered a case based on a complaint from the victim’s family.

According to the police, Harshavardhan used to harass the girl in the name of love. He used to follow her and try to talk to her, the cops said.

When she rebuffed him, he threatened to end his life, said the police.

He also reportedly threatened to harm her family members if she told her father about his advances.

“The convict tried to reach her on WhatsApp. When she did not pick up the call, he called her father and threatened to kill his entire family if he refused to marry his daughter to him,” said the Rachakonda police in their statement.

The girl’s family subsequently lodged a complaint, based on which the police registered an FIR at the Vanasthalipuram Police Station.

After completing their investigation, they arrested Harshavardhan and sent him to judicial custody.
