Hailing the Supreme Court judgement in favour of sub-classification of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) president Manda Krishna Madiga on Thursday, 1 August, sought postponement of recruitment to all government vacancies till the apex court orders came into force.

Krishna Madiga, the tenacious crusader for sub-classification of SC castes, thanked the apex court for rendering justice to the Madigas for the ruling that the states could effect sub-classification.

This judgement was seminal in nature and would remain a watershed in rendering justice to Madigas who have been at the receiving end of reservations in education and employment.

Recalls legislation in undivided Andhra

He recalled Chandrababu Naidu, when he was the chief minister of the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh, bringing in a legislation sub-classifying the SCs. Interestingly, the same Chandrababu Naidu is the chief minister of the reorganised state of Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi, he recalled fighting for this moment for the last 30 years and several protagonists of the cause had died during the struggle.

“I had fought to ensure justice to the Madigas who had been wronged,” he said, adding that he was dedicating the victory to those who laid down their lives in the movement for justice for the Madigas.

He said even though dharma would prevail ultimately, in the short term, adharma might rule the roost.

Krishna Madiga thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking the initiative for the speedy disposal of the case. He said that when Naidu had brought the legislation earlier, several Madigas had benefited from it.

Telangana chief minister hails verdict

Meanwhile, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, making a statement in the Assembly, hailed the Supreme Court’s verdict in favour of sub-classification of the SCs and said Telangana government would implement the judgement before any other state did.

He recalled how he also had fought for sub-classification of the SCs and how he and another Congress leader SA Sampath Kumar were bundled out of the Assembly when they sought an adjournment motion in the Assembly when the BRS was in power.

The chief minister said even though the previous BRS government had promised to take a delegation of the political parties to the Union government to seek sub-classification of the SCs, it did not keep its word.

He said if the Supreme court gave a judgement in favour of sub-categorisation, it was also on account of effective argument that the Telangana government had built in the apex court, he said, while expressing gratitude to the apex court.

To be implemented in all job notifications

The chief minister said that the Supreme Court order would be implemented in all job notifications that had already been issued. All the political parties welcomed the apex court verdict on the issue when the Speaker allowed them to express their opinion on it.

Kadiam Srihari, who defected to the Congress from the BRS, welcomed the verdict and recalled the TDP, Congress, BRS, passing resolutions in the Assembly in the past in favour of sub-classification of the SCs.

BRS member T Harish Rao said that his party welcomed the verdict of the apex court.

He recalled the previous BRS government passing a resolution on 29 November, 2014, in favour of sub-classification of the SCs.

“Former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao himself explained to the Prime Minister on the need for sub-categorisation of the SCs. At that time the prime minister also supported the BRS’ demand,” he said.
