Safran Aircraft Engine Services inks deal with GMR Hyderabad to establish engine MRO facility

Safran Aircraft Engines Services India Pvt Ltd, a Paris-based aerospace company Safran subsidiary, has signed a Land Lease Agreement with GMR Hyderabad Aviation SEZ Limited (GHASL) to establish a cutting-edge engine MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) facility in Hyderabad.

This investment marks a giant leap in the aircraft manufacturing sector in India, as Safran’s Engine MRO facility will be the largest of its kind in the Safran Aircraft Engines network.

Spread across 23.5 acres 

Spanning 23.5 acres within the SEZ area of GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park, the facility will encompass approximately 36,500 square meters of built-up space.

The state-of-the-art facility, specialised in servicing LEAP turbofan engines, will revolutionise India’s aircraft manufacturing landscape, said the company in a statement.

With an initial capacity to handle 100 engines per year, the facility is poised for remarkable growth.

By 2035, it is projected to reach a staggering capacity of servicing around 300 engines annually.

This undertaking is expected to employ around 1,000 people, said the statement.

The facility’s construction is set to commence in September 2023 and will be completed by December 2024 and ready to hand over its transformative operations.

To commence in 2025

Commencing in 2025, this partnership is expected to elevate Hyderabad’s status as a hub for aeronautical excellence and foster a thriving ecosystem within the vicinity of Hyderabad International Airport.

Commenting on this development, Aman Kapoor, CEO of GMR Airport Land Development, said, “We are excited to announce that Safran has chosen GMR Industrial Park after a thorough global assessment and has entered a lease agreement to set up one of the largest Engine MROs in the world.”

Nicolas Potier, Vice-President- Support & Services of Safran Aircraft Engines, said, “I extend my congratulations to GMR on being selected to provide the location for our new MRO shop in Hyderabad.”

He added that the MRO would bring additional capacity to support the operations of our airline customers, and would also contribute to the extension of the aeronautical ecosystem in the Hyderabad International Airport area.
