Revanth’s conciliation approach to Centre pays off: Defence Ministry okays elevated corridor on Hyderabad-Nagpur National Highway

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s diplomacy with the Centre seems to be paying off.

The Union Ministry of Defence on Friday, 1 March, approved the proposal for the construction of an elevated corridor on the Hyderabad-Nagpur National Highway along with the Hyderabad-Karimnagar Rajiv Highway.

The ministry cleared the construction of elevated corridors across defence lands in Hyderabad.

The plan

The chief minister made a representation to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi on 5 January to this effect.

Responding to Revanth Reddy’s plea, the Union government issued permit orders for the construction of the elevated corridors.

The chief minister had requested the Union defence minister to allot 83 acres of land for the construction of a six-lane elevated corridor from Paradise Junction to Outer Ring Road Junction on Rajiv Road connecting Hyderabad to Karimnagar-Ramagundam.

The land would also be expected to be used for the construction of entry and exit ramps for a total of 11.3 km of corridors.

The chief minister also sought the transfer of 56 acres of defence land for the construction of the corridors on a total length of 18.3 km on Nagpur Highway (NH-44).

Out of this, 12.68 km would be constructed as a six-lane elevated corridor, with exits and entries in four areas, and a double-decker corridor for the Metro further in the future.

Now that the Central government has greenlit them, the decks are clear for the development of the transport network in the North Telangana districts of Nizamabad, Adilabad, Karimnagar, and Ramagundam.

The growing traffic problem in the Secunderabad area should also be solved.

The development of elevated corridors from Hyderabad to Shamirpet and Hyderabad to Kandlakoya is expected to promote fast-paced development on the northern side of Hyderabad city.

Crop insurance

The chief minister also decided to adopt the prime minister’s crop insurance scheme — the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) — in Telangana. He said that the state was brought under the scheme to strengthen the agriculture sector.

The state government adopted the PMFBY again to ostensibly safeguard the farmers from the hardships of the sector.

The decision was taken at a meeting the chief minister attended with the state’s Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao and PMFBY CEO and Joint Secretary Ritesh Chauhan at the state Secretariat on Friday.

Revanth Reddy and the Central government officer discussed the implementation of the farmer insurance scheme in Telangana from 2016 to 2020, and its subsequent withdrawal.

With the state deciding to rejoin the PMFBY scheme, its farmers are expected to get crop insurance from the next crop season, an official press release said.

Ritesh Chauhan said that the farmers would benefit from the scheme, with timely compensation provided in case of crop loss.

The chief minister said that his government was giving top priority to the implementation of farmer-centric welfare policies in the overall development of the state.
