Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the Gandhis have sacrificed much for the nation.
Synopsis: The chief minister announced plans for four new airports and one dry port in Telangana. The state had also secured approval for the Hyderabad–Bengaluru Greenfield Highway and a bullet train, he said, “after persistent pressure on the Centre”.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday, 2 December, came out in defence of Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, while outlining an expansive welfare and development agenda for the state.
Reddy said the Gandhi family had made unparalleled sacrifices for the country.
Referring to the fresh FIR registered against them in the National Herald case, Reddy said the Gandhis had given everything for the nation.
“They even laid down their lives for India,” he said, recalling how the family used its own assets to start the National Herald newspaper during the freedom movement.
Addressing a high-level Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) executive meeting, he said Sonia and Rahul Gandhi had worked to financially assist National Herald employees and revive the newspaper.
“To revive the publication, the board required eminent leaders. That is why stalwarts like Mallikarjun Kharge were appointed to the Board of Directors,” he explained, stressing that no public money was involved in the newspaper’s functioning.
Reddy said cases filed by central agencies amounted to “harassment”, aimed at diverting attention from the nationwide campaign led by Rahul Gandhi against the alleged “vote theft”.
“We strongly condemn these illegal cases against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. We are passing a resolution to stand firmly with them and convey to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that we are ready to fight till the end if necessary,” he declared.
The chief minister urged district Congress presidents to intensify mass outreach on government welfare schemes.
He highlighted the distribution of Indiramma sarees, which he said had brought “immense happiness” to women.
“We are giving one crore sarees to one crore women. It is your responsibility to ensure every eligible woman receives one,” he told party leaders.
He directed party functionaries to complete the distribution of 65 lakh sarees in rural areas by December and 35 lakh sarees in urban areas by March.
Reddy reiterated that the Congress government was steering Telangana “from crisis to welfare.” The government aims to transform the state into a US$1 trillion economy by 2034 and US$3 trillion by 2047, he said.
He announced that a public meeting would be held on Sunday, 7 December, in front of the Arts College at Osmania University, where funds would be sanctioned for the university’s development.
“We will turn Osmania University into a world-class institution with international standards,” he assured. The state will host the Telangana Rising Global Summit on 8 and 9 December, during which the Telangana Rising-2047 Vision Document will be unveiled.
Reddy detailed the state’s new regional development model centred on three zones:
The chief minister announced plans for four new airports and one dry port in Telangana. The state had also secured approval for the Hyderabad–Bengaluru Greenfield Highway and a bullet train, he said, “after persistent pressure on the Centre”.
Reddy reminded party workers that political achievements must be actively publicised.
“We must tell people what we are doing and the welfare we are delivering,” he said, calling on the cadre to take governance discussions to every village. He emphasised that making Rahul Gandhi the next prime minister was a collective responsibility of the party.
“Being a district president is a major responsibility. Negligence will not be tolerated,” he warned. “Obstacles in politics are natural; do not treat them as big problems. Move forward with coordination and unity,” he added.
