Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addresses a rally in Kollapur in Telangana on Tuesday, 31 October, 2023.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, 31 October, described as a campaign of calumny the BRS’ accusation that his party would wind up the Rythu Bandhu scheme if it came to power in the state.

Addressing a huge election rally at Kollapur in the Nagarkurnool district, he said the Congress would actually extend the Rythu Bharosa scheme to include tenant farmers.

Under this scheme, farmers and tenant farmers would be paid ₹15,000 per year per acre, he said.

Battle between overlords and people

Rahul Gandhi said that though his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi was to have addressed the rally, she could not make it as she was indisposed.

He managed to take time out of his busy schedule to be with the people in Kollapur, despite having an important meeting in Delhi, since he always treated them as a part of his family.

“I am not here because the relation between you and me is political. It is more than that. It is a family relation,” he said.

He added that the people of Telangana were aware of what was happening in Dorala Telangana, and that the masses were not ready to be taken for a ride again.

“The upcoming election is a battle between dorala Telangana (the overlords) and prajala Telangana (the people). Positioned on one side is the family of [Telangana Chief Minister and BRS chief] K Chandrashekar Rao], and on the other side are the teeming millions, who comprise mothers, sisters, unemployed youths, and farmers,” he said.

Rahul also touched upon the sinking of the piers of Medigadda barrage, which is part of the Kaleshwaram project.

Taking a swipe at KCR and the BRS regime, he said that projects built when the Congress was in power were still in ship-shape.

Nagarjuna Sagar, Sriram Sagar, Singur, and Jurala were still very strong, while the Kaleshwaram project, which was built only recently, appeared to be on the verge of collapsing, he claimed.

He also said Kaleshwaram was one of the greatest scams, as ₹1 lakh crore of the people’s money went into the pockets of KCR and his family. “Both KCR and the BJP have looted the state,” he said.

Congress promises reiterated

The Congress leader also said that the people of Telangana had seen a dream and fought for it, but the state they got was not the one that they had seen in their dreams.

It was run by the doralu (feudal lords), who sought the fealty of their subjects, he alleged.

However, he said, there was no need for the people to be disheartened because the Congress would deliver the kind of rule that the people wanted in the state.

He said that the Congress had already unveiled its manifesto before the people in the form of six guarantees, and that his party would implement all of them after coming to power.

He said that under Mahalakshmi, every woman would be paid ₹2,500 per month, LPG cylinders would be supplied for ₹500, and farmers would be paid ₹15,000 per acre per year under Rythu Bharosa.

This apart, the Congress government would also pay ₹5 lakh for Indiramma Houses, provide free power up to 200 units to all white ration card holders, give Vidya Bharosa card to students with ₹5 lakh limit, pay ₹4,000 pension to the elderly, physically challenged and widows, and provide medical insurance up to ₹10 lakh under Rajiv Arogya Sree.
