Rachakonda Police report 6.86% rise in crime in 2023; crimes against women decline

Commissioner G Sudheer Babu highlighted road safety improvements and praised Rachakonda for topping the state in convictions for five years.

The Rachakonda Police Commissionerate witnessed a 6.86 percent increase in crime in 2023 compared to last year. The total number of reported crime cases was 2,562 in 2023 against 2,049 in 2022.

The Rachakonda Commissionerate, however, saw cases of crime against women drop 6.25 percent year on year — to 3,122 from 3,330.

Rachakonda Commissioner of Police (CP) G Sudheer Babu, speaking at the annual round-up event held in Nagole on Wednesday, 27 December, noted, “The Rachakonda Commissionerate covers Outer Ring Road routes and the accidents have been reduced among other categories reported. Road accidents dropped by 5.76 percent with 3321 cases reported in 2023 as against 3524 cases in 2022.”

Rachakonda achieved the first position in Telangana for convictions in grave crime categories for five consecutive years, he said.

The conviction rate in the Commisionerate was 52 percent in 2019, 71 percent in 2020, 72 percent in 2021, 94 percent in 2022, and 89 percent in 2023, according to the data.

The highest number of cases in the state where convictions turned to life terms were in Rachakonda, added Sudheer Babu. The number was 20.

Crime against women

In the category of crime against women, the total cases were 3,122 in 2023 as against 3,330 in 2023.

The highest number of such cases this year was for harassment and domestic violence — 1,582. The second was molestation at 744 cases.

The rape cases went down to 327 in 2023 from 372 in 2022.  In the reported cases, the accused were known to the survivors in 327 instances.

They were friends in 280 cases, neighbours in 12, family members were three, and other acquaintances in 32.

Case numbers under the POCSO Act were 317 in 2023 as against 442 in 2022.

The CP praised the police on duty and said creating awareness had reduced crimes against women.

He also said that survivors were always allowed to feel safe in police stations and submit their grievances.

Other cases

The Commissionerate saw the registration fo 282 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

A total of 698 accused were arrested in these cases. Seizures included 5,882.965 kg of marijuana, one pipe, 12 marijuana plants, 6.55 litre hashish oil, 262 grams of MDMA, 4.505 kg of opium, and 377 gram of heroin.

In other crimes, CP Sudheer Babu recollected recollected the gruesome murder of BTech student Perala Hari Hara Krishna by Nenavath Naveen over a suspected love triangle with his girlfriend.

He noted that the victim’s body was mutilated in this case, registered under the Abdullapurmet Police Station.

He also recalled the gang-rape of a minor girl by an accused named Abed and two others in her residence under the Meerpet Police Station.

He also recalled an honour-killing case where Syed Mobin and Mohammed Masood receiving life sentences for murdering Billipuram Nagaraju over an inter-religious marriage in Saroornagar.

In another case, one Abhiram Das was sentenced to life for kidnapping and raping a four-year-old girl in Keesara.

In one case, Mareddy Matta Reddy and seven others were convicted for the murder of realtors Srinivas Reddy and Ragavender Reddy over land disputes in Ibrahimpatnam.

One Macharla Ramesh was sentenced to life for murdering his wife and child due to family pressure over caste differences in Ghatkesar.

Cybercrime cases

The CP said Cybercrime cases went up 25 percent this year compared to 2022. The cases registered were 2,562 in 2023 as against 2,049 in 2022.

He recalled one case of loan app fraud where a Chinese national provided an instant loan of ₹10,500 to a victim and extracted a total amount of ₹2,49,433 by blackmail.

The foreign national threatened to circulate morphed photos of the victim on social media and to his contacts.

In another case, the accused from Nigeria — with the help of a fake Instagram profile — chatted with victims on Instagram and made him believe that they had sent gifts like gold and money to them.

The accused then impersonated customs officers and extracted an amount of ₹3.63 lakh. Both the accused were arrested.
