Telangana Governor's quota MLC

Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS) president M Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan — the joint editor of the Urdu Newspaper Siasat — were appointed MLCs under the Governor’s quota on Thursday, 25 January.

Amer Ali Khan is the son of the newspaper’s resident editor Javed Ali Khan.

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan is understood to have cleared their names after Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka made a request to her when they met her Raj Bhavan on Wednesday.

Revanth Reddy keeps his word

Revanth Reddy had announced in the past that he would honour Kodandaram, who played a crucial role in the Telangana movement, by appointing him to an important position.

He was the chairman of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (T-JAC). He supported the Congress in the recent Assembly elections.

During the Telangana movement, Kodandaram remained its backbone. He toured Telangana extensively, sensitising people to fight for a separate state.

He played an important role in leading the Sakala Janula Samme, Million March and Sagara Harmam agitations which brought tremendous pressure on the then UPA-II government at the centre which finally acquiesced and delivered Telangana state.

Rift with KCR

Kodandaram was former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s comrade in arms during the Telangana movement but after the creation of the state, serious differences surfaced between the two leaders.

Kodandaram subsequently moved away from KCR and BRS (then TRS) and started his Jana Samiti.

According to sources, Revanth Reddy sent the two names to the Governor before he left for Davos, which was approved by the latter on Thursday.

Interestingly, the Governor cleared the names days after she recently decided to wait till the cases filed in the state High Court against her rejection of their nominations to the MLC berths under the Governor’s quota by the previous government were disposed of.

The plea was filed by BRS members Dasoju Sravan and K Satyanarayana who were nominated by the previous dispensation as the MLCs under the Governor’s quota.
