A 21-year-old postgraduate student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room on the institute’s campus in the Sangareddy district of Telangana on Monday, 7 August.

This was the second suicide by an IIT-Hyderabad student in less than a month. Four students of the institute have died by suicide from September 2022 to August 2023.

The suicide

In the latest incident, the first-year MTech student, identified as Mamita Naik and hailing from Odisha, was found unresponsive on Monday night by some of her classmates.

According to a police official of Sangareddy Rural police station, the worried classmates had gone to the room after the student — who had joined the course on July 26 — did not come down for lunch and dinner on Monday.

The IIT authorities told South First, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic demise of one of our first-year MTech students, who joined IITH about a week back. Our hearts go out to her family and all who were connected to her during this difficult time. We are actively cooperating with law enforcement agencies to aid in the investigation surrounding this tragic incident.”

The cops received information and rushed to the spot late on Monday night.

In a suicide note purportedly written by the student, she mentioned some financial problems in the family and reportedly took the extreme step as she was depressed about it, the police said.

The cops have registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC in this regard, and have sent the body for post-mortem examination.
