Synopsis: Complainant Madhavi said she had been a village organisation assistant and was removed from the post. While speaking to the villagers, a local Congress leader and husband of the village’s former sarpanch questioned her authority to address the people. They assaulted her, besides hurling sexist and casteist slurs on Gandhi Jayanti.
Telangana Police have registered a case against a local Congress leader in Nalgonda district’s Chinthapalli mandal for allegedly assaulting and hurling casteist slurs at a Dalit woman.
A video of the alleged incident was circulated on social media, prompting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to take a dig at Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha.
The case was registered on a complaint by Ganipalli Madhavi, a former village organisation assistant (VOA), who accused Koppula Amarnath Goud of assaulting her at a Gram Sabha in PK Mallepally village on 2 October.
Police invoked sections 74, 115(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which cover assault on a woman, causing hurt and intentional insult, along with sections 3(1)(r), 3(1)(s) and 3(2)(va) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the Congress leader belonging to the backward Goud community.
Madhavi said she worked as the VOA for eight years before being removed from the post around four months ago. She said she has challenged her removal in court and the case is ongoing.
She alleged that at about 1:30 pm on 2 October, she was speaking with women from the village’s self-help groups at the Gram Panchayat office, where the Gram Sabha was underway, and mentioned her unjust removal and the ongoing case.
Goud, who is married to the former Sarpanch Parvathi, allegedly questioned her authority to address the people and abused her using sexist and casteist slurs. He then physically assaulted her, grabbed her by the hair, and pushed her to the ground, the complaint read.
She urged the police to initiate legal action against him.
The video showed a man, alleged to be Goud, slapping the woman, who hit back. The man was then seen pulling her hair and throwing her to the ground.
AAP shared the video on its X handle on the night of Monday, 5 October, tagging Rahul Gandhi.
“Rahul Gandhi ji, what is happening in Congress-ruled Telangana? Your leaders are slapping women. This is not smashing the patriarchy. This is smashing women’s dignity,” the post read.
