In his quest to capture South India for the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Hyderabad on Friday, 15 March, to mobilise support from people in Telangana for the party in the Lok Sabha elections.

The Election Commission is expected to issue the schedule for the elections on Saturday, which would also signal the coming into force of the Model Code of Conduct.

The prime minister flew down to Telangana from Kerala, where the saffron party is struggling to get a toe-hold.

He conducted a road show in Hyderabad on arrival, hoping to charm the Telangana people into supporting the BJP party.

The roadshow

After his special aircraft touched down at Begupet Airport in the evening, the prime minister undertook a roadshow for a distance of about 1.3 km from Mirjalguda to Malkajgiri Cross Roads.

Modi cheered the people who stood on either side of the road, and they reciprocated his gesture by showering flower petals on his vehicle.

Quite many BJP activists turned up, cheering the prime minister all along the route, which lent a saffron aura to the area.

The road between Mirajalguda to Malkajgiri is part of the Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency, the largest in the entire country, and is considered a microcosm of India.

People from different states have settled down there. The constituency has more than 31.5 lakh voters.

Flanked by Union minister and Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy and the BJP’s Malkajgiri candidate Eatala Rajender, the prime minister, wearing his usual saffron cap, kept waving at the people from his open vehicle as it moved forward.

The crowd that collected on either side of the road had a fair sprinkling of youth and rural population.

The party leaders had mobilised people from nearby villages apart from the local people who turned up to see Modi in the flesh.

The party workers kept chanting Modi’s name as the convoy of his vehicles wended through the roads.

On Saturday, he will leave for Nagarkurnool where he is expected to address a huge public meeting.

BRS sitting MP Pothuganti Ramulu’s son Bharat is the BJP’s candidate for the Nagarkunrool (SC) Lok Sabha seat.

Modi is also expected to address a public meeting in Jagtiyal, which is part of Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency, on 18 March.
