Synopsis: Following the deadly blast at Sigachi Industries, confusion continues to prevail over compensation for the injured. There is an announcement for compensation for the deceased. However, there is no information from the government or the company regarding the compensation for those injured.

Days after the deadly blast at Sigachi Industries in Pashamylaram in the Sangareddy district of Telangana claimed 40 lives and injured over 30, confusion continues to prevail over compensation for the injured. The explosion, which tore through the pharma company’s facility on 30 June, left many bodies charred beyond recognition.

Meanwhile, 20 bodies have been sent to their native villages, four were cremated locally, and 16 await DNA identification. As of Saturday, 5 July, 22 injured workers are undergoing treatment and are reportedly in stable condition.

While the company has announced ₹1 crore ex gratia financial aid to the families of the deceased, the matter of compensating the injured remains unclear.

Both the Telangana government and Sigachi Industries claim to be bearing medical costs, while ground officials confirm that no formal compensation — beyond limited interim relief — has been announced for survivors.

Compensation for the injured?

In their 2 July press note that announced the financial aid, Sigachi Industries stated that the company is dedicated to the recovery of the injured, noting that they were covering the medical expenses. However, this is at odds with the government’s claim of doing the same.

Speaking to South First, Sangareddy Additional Collector Chandrashekar Badugu revealed that the cost of treatment was borne by the state. “The state is bearing the medical expenses for all the injured currently,” he said, adding that the government released ₹50,000 for each of the injured to cover immediate expenses, following the chief minister’s order.

“Sigachi is fully committed to supporting all those impacted by this unfortunate incident. We are bearing the medical expenses of all the injured individuals and are ensuring they receive the best possible treatment,” a company source told  South First.

The clashing claims from both parties aside, there is another glaring omission from the press release. Despite the claim of full support for the injured, there is no mention of any financial compensation to the workers.

Chandrashekhar also confirmed the same. “There is an announcement for compensation for the deceased. However, there is no information from the government or the company regarding the compensation for those injured,” he said.

Notably, speaking to the media on 1 July, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy demanded that Sigachi Industries pay ₹10 lakh to those seriously injured and unable to work and ₹5 lakh to those injured.  Yet, the company told South First that they had only provided an interim relief of ₹1 lakh to those discharged.

“Our priority is the well-being and recovery of all those impacted. This compensation will be determined based on the nature and severity of each injury and will be provided over and above all treatment-related support. As of today (5 July), 12 out of the 33 injured team members have been discharged, each provided with ₹1 lakh as interim relief,” they stated.

With Sigachi’s management named in an FIR for culpable homicide and the investigation gaining momentum, it remains to be seen where the case is headed.
