Dr Mazheruddin Ali Khan, a noted doctor and father-in-law of the Hyderabad MP and AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi’s second daughter (Yasmeen Owaisi) allegedly committed suicide on 27 February

Orthopaedic specialist Dr Mazheruddin Ali Khan died by suicide at his Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad on Monday, 27 December.

The deceased was the father-in-law of Hyderabad MP and All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi’s second daughter Yasmeen Owaisi.

The police said a family dispute over property might have forced Khan to take the extreme step. “Prima facie, it looks like a suicide,” West Zone DCP Joel Davis told South First.

He was working at Owaisi Hospital & Research Centre in Santosh Nagar.

The officer added that the incident occurred between 6 am and 11 am on Monday at Banjara Hills’ MLA Colony.

“He was rushed to Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills by servants and family members, but he died before reaching the hospital,” said the DCP.

Dispute over property

Investigators said Khan was the younger brother of Zaheruddin Ali Khan, the managing editor of the Urdu newspaper Siasat.

He was close to brothers Akbaruddin Owaisi and Asaduddin Owaisi. Khan was also a classmate of former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin.

Neighbours reportedly told the police that loud arguments were often heard from Khan’s residence over the past few months. They even recalled hearing gunshots.

The DCP said Khan was locked in a property dispute with his family members and cases were also filed in court. Reports said the deceased had invested in his wife’s properties and incurred losses.

Khan had been living separately after his wife levelled domestic violence allegations against him.

The police have registered a case and are investigating. A Crime Laboratory Ultimate Evidence System (CLUES) team of the Hyderabad police, too, visited the scene.
