The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday, 19 July, issued an orange alert for 10 districts in Telangana for the next 48 hours even as torrential rains continued to lash several parts of the state.

The orange alert was issued for Mancherial, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Rajanna Sirsilla, Karimnagar, Peddapally, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Siddipet.

These districts are likely to receive heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rains (115.6-204.4 mm) on Wednesday and Thursday.

Another 10 districts — Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Janagaon, and Yadadri Bhuvangiri — are put on yellow alert. Isolated heavy showers are likely in these districts.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers in most places across Telangana on Wednesday.

A yellow alert has been issued for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) areas for the next two days, indicating the possibility of light to moderate intermittent rain, with occasional intense spells.

Cyclonic circulation

An upper air cyclonic circulation over Odisha and its adjoining areas in the Northwest Bay of Bengal and the Central Bay of Bengal led to the present weather conditions, said K Nagarthna, Head of the meteorological Centre in Hyderabad.

“Another cyclonic circulation is also present at a lower altitude, extending up to 1.5 km above the sea level,” she told South First.

Nagarathna further said that under the influence of these cyclonic circulations and a low-pressure area expected to form over the North West Bay and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours, Telangana is likely to experience light to moderate rain over most places during the next 48 hours.

Some areas may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, while the northern districts may experience heavy rain — at times very heavy.
