NMC turns down Mahbubnagar Medical College request to admit 150 students to MBBS course

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has turned down a proposal for admitting 150 new undergraduates to the Government Medical College in Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district.

The regulatory body rejected the proposal based on an assessment report by the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), which found deficiencies in the college.

The NMC’s letter of disapproval addressed to the college dean highlighted that assessors, appointed by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), had conducted a physical assessment during the final MBBS practical examination on 27 February.

Medical colleges have to seek renewal from NMC every five years. The assessment conducted in February was Mahabubnagar Medical College’s first after it was launched in 2016.

The UGMEB reported shortcomings in the teaching faculty and the functioning of cameras at the medical college.

“The assessment report noted certain deficiencies in respect of the teaching faculty and footage of camera installed at your medical college,” the NMC said.

Virtual hearing held

In response to the college’s submission, a virtual hearing was held on 13 June, wherein the college authorities presented their case.

“After hearing the college authorities and careful consideration of the facts and compliance, it has been opined by the UGMEB that the response of the college authorities is not found satisfactory and Government Medical College, Mahabubnagar, still does not qualify for the minimum requirement of faculty and Resident Doctors on AEBAS (Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System) and also installation/functioning of cameras,” the NMC pointed out.

Given the deficiencies, the NMC rejected the application for the recognition of the MBBS degree programme with 150 seats, granted by Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, Warangal, for the students trained at Government Medical College, Mahabubnagar.

Second rejection for Telangana

This was the second time that the NMC had rejected the application of a medical college in Telangana. The NMC had in 2018-19 turned down the Nizamabad Government Medical College’s application.

However, the college was eventually granted permission after the state health secretary provided an undertaking, saying the deficiencies would be addressed.

The NMC’s disapproval means that a new batch of MBBS students will not be admitted.

“Recently the Telangana government has recruited faculty members and even appointed them to colleges. The government has time to go on appeal under Section 35(5) of the NMC Act. Whether new admissions will take place or not this year will be clarified in the coming days,” a health department official told South First.
