Nizamabad: Food stall owner self immolates in police station premises, family alleges harassment from police

They accused the police of mentally harassing him and demanded stringent action against the officials responsible.

A man operating a food stall in Bheemgal town in Nizamabad district attempted to end his life by setting himself on fire, on the premises of the Bheemgal police station on Monday, 5 October. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

The man, identified as Polasa Sudhakar is a food vendor and runs his kiosk at the Bheemgal bus stand. Police had booked a case against him for allegedly keeping his establishment open, with tables set out in front, beyond 10 PM. He was reportedly told to appear before Court and pay a fine.

The incident took place around 10 AM on Monday when Sudhakar was called to the station.

Sudhakar’s family alleged that this was not the first time he was penalised. He had already been fined thrice and felt he was being singled out, even though other shops in the area stayed open late into the night.

Family members and relatives gathered outside the police station and staged a protest. They accused the police of mentally harassing him and demanded stringent action against the officials responsible.
