NIA arrests 17th accused from Hyderabad in Hizb-Ut-Tahrir terror module case.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday, 1 August, arrested a person from Hyderabad in Telangana allegedly in connection with the unlawful activities of a terrorist module with allegiance to Hizb-Ut-Tahrir (HuT).

The HuT is said to be an international fundamentalist organisation operating in Bhopal and Hyderabad.

The arrested accused Salman, who was absconding, is said to be a HuT member. He was arrested from Rajendranagar in Hyderabad, following raids in the city.

“The team was from the Bhopal office of NIA and they made the arrest in the morning,” an official of the Hyderabad NIA told South First.

17th accused arrested

With this, the number of arrests made by the NIA from the HuT module based on the case registered on 24 May, 2023, in Bhopal reached 17.

The NIA said it seized incriminating digital devices — including hard disks, pen drives, and SD cards — along with various documents following the searches at two locations to nab Salman.

According to the agency, the searches were conducted based on credible inputs.

Salman was an active member of the Hyderabad-based module of the HuT, which was led by one Salim, who is already behind bars.

Salim, along with Salman and four others, are accused of operating the Hyderabad module of the HuT.

“They were operating to expand their outfit with an aim to overthrow the constitutionally formed government in India and establish a Caliphate based on Shariat (a body of Islamic laws derived from the Quran and the Hadith — among others — that is the law of the land, albeit with some modifications in many Islamic countries across the world),” said the NIA.

The agency’s investigations reportedly showed that the HuT was trying to clandestinely build an organisation by recruiting impressionable Muslim youths.

The agency said it was continuing its investigations in the case and expected to unravel the entire conspiracy of HuT to destabilise the country.

Charge sheet in Hyderabad terror recruitment

On 29 March, the NIA filed a charge sheet in the Hyderabad terror recruitment case in which the city’s police arrested three people in October 2022.

The trio was identified as Mohammad Abdul Wajid alias Zahed (39), Mohammad Samiuddin alias Sami (39), and Maaz Hassan Farooq alias Maaz (29), according to the NIA.

They were charged for their role in the terrorist conspiracy to raise funds, collect explosives, and carry out recruitment for terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

While the three accused were arrested on 2 October with four hand grenades and ₹20 lakh, the NIA took over the case in February this year.

The NIA said that four hand grenades were dead dropped on 28 September, 2022, at an isolated spot near Manoharabad village on the Hyderabad-Nagpur highway.

The Investigation agency added that Wajid conspired with his gang members hailing from Hyderabad but settled in Pakistan — Farhatullah Ghori alias FG, Siddique Bin Osman alias Rafique alias Abu Hamzala, and Abdul Majeed alias Chotu.

They aimed at carrying out terror acts, including blasts and lone-wolf attacks, in Hyderabad city to create terror in the minds of the common public.
