Synopsis: A retired professor couple in Hyderabad’s Jawahar Nagar were allegedly robbed by Nepali domestic workers and accomplices who tied, drugged, and confined them before fleeing with gold, silver, cash, foreign currency, and phones. Police suspect seven persons, including habitual offender Meena Bahadur. Special teams are tracking the gang, believed to have escaped to Nepal.

In yet another case involving Nepali domestic workers, a retired professor couple was allegedly robbed at their residence in Jawahar Nagar on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The gang is said to have escaped with gold and silver jewellery, cash, foreign currency, and mobile phones after tying up and drugging the victims.

The incident comes on the heels of the sensational murder-cum-robbery at the house of a retired IPS officer Vinay Ranjan Ray in Jubilee Hills, which is also being investigated for the alleged involvement of a Nepali gang.

The victims in the latest case were identified as retired professor N. Murali Mohan (68) and his wife Dr. K. Vijayalakshmi (58), residents of Golf Enclave in Kowkoor under Jawahar Nagar police station limits in Medchal-Malkajgiri district.

According to a close relative Ashok, Nepali couple had joined the household as domestic workers around 20 days ago and gradually gained the trust of the elderly couple. A few days later, another woman claiming to be related to them also started visiting the house regularly.

Birthday bash turns nightmare

On Monday, 11 May, night, the workers reportedly sought permission to celebrate the domestic help’s birthday at the residence. Believing them, the couple agreed. During the gathering, three more persons arrived at the house claiming to be relatives of the workers.

As the couple was having dinner, the accused allegedly staged a birthday celebration with a cake before suddenly overpowering them from behind. The gang threatened the victims, tied their hands with ropes and warned them against resisting.

Fearing for their lives, the couple reportedly pleaded with the accused not to harm them and allowed them to take valuables from the house.

Police said the gang fled with nearly 75 to 85 tolas of gold jewellery, about 20 kg of silver ornaments, including diamond, ruby and emerald-studded items, Rs 30,000 cash, 3,000 US dollars, two mobile phones and a vehicle.

Before fleeing, the accused allegedly forced the victims to consume drugs and confined them inside a room after locking all the gates of the house.

The couple remained unconscious or under the influence of the drugs until Tuesday afternoon, police said. Later, Murali Mohan reportedly noticed residents passing by outside the house and raised an alarm from a window, prompting locals to rescue them. The police suspect the involvement of at least seven persons in the robbery.

Suspects secured fake identities

According to the police officer, the suspects had secured employment using fake identities and fabricated details. Preliminary investigation revealed that they fled to Delhi after the robbery and later escaped to Nepal. Malkajgiri DCP CH Sridhar said six special teams had been deployed to track down the accused.

Relatives of the victims alleged that the gang removed CCTV cameras, DVR systems and electrical connections from the house before dumping them in water to destroy evidence.

Police suspect the involvement of a habitual offender identified as Meena Bahadur alias Mamta in the robbery whose identity was confirmed through fingerprints collected from the house. She was previously involved in a theft case registered under the Moinabad police station limits.

Police have registered a case and formed special teams to track down the absconding suspects. Alerts have also been issued to nearby police stations and transit points as part of the search operation.
