NCW seeks report from Telangana DGP over Hyderabad man disrobing woman on-road in his mother's presence incident

The National Commission of Women (NCW) has asked Telangana DGP Anjani Kumar for a report on an alleged incident of a man stripping a young woman on a public road in Hyderabad.

The man’s mother was reportedly present when he disrobed the woman at Jawahar Nagar in Telangana’s capital on Sunday, 7 August. The incident came to light after CCTV visuals went viral on social media.

Strongly condemning the incident, the NCW demanded a prompt investigation, besides providing medical support to the harassed woman. The NCW directed the DGP to submit the report in seven days.

“NCW strongly condemns [the] shocking incident in Hyderabad. A young woman [was] stripped on the road after resisting molestation, while another brave woman tried to intervene,” the women’s panel tweeted.

Expressing distress over the incident, Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan instructed the chief secretary and DGP to initiate action against the culprits and submit a detailed report.

Man, mother arrested

According to the police, the 28-year-old woman had stepped out of a store and was crossing the road near the Balaji Nagar bus stand around 8 pm.

“The accused, identified as Peddaramaiah (30), touched her inappropriately from behind. When she turned around and objected, he became aggressive, disrobed and assaulted her,” DCP Malkajgiri D Janaki told South First.

The women then confronted the mother of the accused, R Naggama (55), who was present at the scene but reportedly did nothing to stop her son.

“She caught hold of the saree of the accused’s mother and simultaneously dialled the police,” the DCP said.

Meanwhile, the video showed the woman naked on the road for a while before another woman and passersby covered her with a blue plastic sheet.

Peddaramaiah reportedly tried to assault the other woman as well.

“The police team reached immediately, comforted the woman, and took the accused in custody. She was later shifted to the nearby Sakhi Centre,” Janaki said.

The Jawahar Nagar police have registered a case under IPC sections 354 (b) (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) read with Section 34 (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) against the accused and his mother

The mother and son are now in judicial custody, the police said.
