A 51-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in Hyderabad’s Borabanda area in the early hours of Sunday, 28 June, with his family claiming that he had been under severe mental distress over issues related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The deceased, identified as Sheikh Mujibar Rahman, was a resident of Bharat Nagar in Borabanda and worked as a car driver.

According to police and family members, Rahman became increasingly anxious after his name was reportedly not found in the SIR list. His family alleged that he feared discrepancies in his electoral and identity records could result in legal consequences and was deeply worried about the future of his family, particularly two of his three children, who have intellectual disabilities.

‘Spent a considerable amount of money’

The family claimed Rahman had spent a considerable amount of money through agents in an attempt to correct errors in his documents, but the issues remained unresolved, adding to his distress.

In a complaint lodged with the Borabanda police, Rahman’s wife, Ismail Bi, said the family had dinner together on Saturday night, after which she went to sleep while her husband remained awake. He was later found unresponsive outside their residence by their elder son in the early hours of Sunday. Family members alerted the police, but he had already died.

Borabanda police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The exact circumstances leading to the death are yet to be established.

The incident comes as the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is underway in Telangana. Family members have linked Rahman’s distress to concerns over voter verification and discrepancies in his identity documents. Police have not officially confirmed whether these concerns were the direct cause of the death, and the investigation is continuing.
