Nalgonda butcher sentenced to death in 2013 tween rape, murder case

According to the prosecution, Mukarram lured the minor girl, sexually assaulted, and killed her and dumped the body in a canal to conceal the crime.

Synopsis: The trial that began in 2015 relied heavily on scientific, medical, and technical evidence, as there were no direct eyewitnesses. Police investigations, including forensic reports and the recovery of the victim’s body, played a crucial role in establishing Mukarram’s guilt.

A fast-track POCSO court in Telangana’s Nalgonda district, on Thursday, 14 August, sentenced to death a 24-year-old man for raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl in 2013.

After a trial that spanned 10 years, Additional District Judge N Roja Ramani, holding charges of the SC/ST court and Fast-track court for Rape and POCSO cases, also slapped a fine of ₹1.1 lakh on Mohammed Mukarram.

The rape and murder of the home-alone girl had shocked Nalgonda in 2013.

“The accused is sentenced to be hanged by the neck until death for the offence punishable under Section 302 of the IPC, and also to pay a fine of ₹50,000 for the offence punishable under Section 302 of the IPC. In default of payment of the fine amount, he shall undergo simple imprisonment for a period of six months, which shall be in addition to the principal sentence,” the court ordered.

Court orders compensation 

Mukarram was also sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for seven years for the offence punishable under Section 201 of the IPC, and also to pay a fine of ₹10,000. Failure to pay the fine would invite six months of additional simple imprisonment.

The judge said that the deceased girl must be compensated for both physical and mental suffering and “an amount of ₹ 10,00,000 is decided as compensation amount and therefore, the Secretary, District Legal Service Authority, is directed to take steps for the payment of the said compensation amount to the mother of the deceased victim girl at the earliest”.

According to the prosecution, Mukarram, a butcher from Nalgonda, lured the victim, sexually assaulted the girl, killed her and tossed the body into a canal to conceal the crime on 28 April 2013. After three days, the police found the girl’s body.

The Nalgonda One Town Police Station registered a case under the POCSO Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for murder and sexual assault.

A chargesheet was filed in 2015, and the trial proceeded over the past decade, culminating in the verdict.
