A man and his daughter were electrocuted while clearing debris left behind by torrential showers in Hyderabad’s Alwal on Saturday, 13 June.
Identified the deceased as Sandeep, a 44-year-old manager at a private firm, and his daughter Rithika, a 16-year-old student, police said Sandeep’s wife suffered burns in the incident.
The family was clearing tree branches left behind by overnight torrential monsoon showers on their residential premises in the morning when they came into contact with a snapped live wire. Sandeep and Rithika were killed instantly. Police said the bodies were shifted to the Gandhi Hospital.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon continued to wreak havoc, upending normal life in Hyderabad. The heavy overnight downpour caused extensive waterlogging in several parts of the city, disrupting a smooth flow of vehicular traffic, and affecting the normal functioning of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
The rains, which started late on Friday and continued till early Saturday morning, overwhelmed stormwater drains and inundated roads in multiple locations. East and South Hyderabad were the worst affected. Commuters heavily relied on the Metro Rail system, leaving the stations crowded.
Police diverted traffic between 11 pm and 5 am in the central Hyderabad area due to fallen Low Tension (LT) wires in Ashok Nagar and RTC X Roads Junction.
Waterlogging threw life out of gear in SR Nagar, Balkampet, Panjagutta, Masab Tank, Falaknuma, and the IT corridor of Kondapur and Gachibowli.
A leaking roof left the platforms of the Begumpet Railway Station filled with rainwater. The station was recently modernised under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and re-inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Operations at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) were also affected. Several flights were diverted, including the Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s flight from New Delhi, which was forced to land in Bengaluru.
