Chilkur Village in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district remained peaceful on Tuesday, 23 July, a day after a centuries-old mosque was demolished.

The Moinabad police have arrested a backhoe operator, who was at the scene when the mosque, known as Jagirdar Masjid, was demolished late on Monday. His assistant, too, has been booked.

A large posse of police personnel were deployed in the area, even as several residents and politicians visited the site.

Case registered

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

“The locality is peaceful and political leaders are visiting the area,” Ch Srinivas, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rajendranagar zone) said.

“They are discussing an alternative arrangement for the Muslims. A JCB driver is placed under remand. Special teams have been formed to arrest all involved,” the officer said.

Officials from the Minority Welfare Department, too, visited the site.

AIMIM MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig said he has been in touch with the police and Waqf Board members regarding making alternative arrangements for Muslims to offer prayers and protect the historic monuments.

Taking to X, the MLC said he would submit a report to higher authorities.

Amjed Ullah Khan of the Majlis Bachao Tehreek (Save Masjid Movement) demanded a temporary tent to offer prayers.

What residents say

Chilkur resident Lekhnisha discarded reports of disturbances in the area as false news. “It is all peaceful. Muslims and Hindus have been living together peacefully,” she told South First.

Lekhnisha claimed she informed the Waqf Board and the police after being alerted about the incident.

The mosque of historical importance on a densely wooded four acres was under the state Waqf Board.

Another resident, Mohammad Ahmed, said the mosque was completely razed. “The police will find out why it was demolished. Until then, the names of the accused could not be revealed,” he added.
