Hours after she was kidnapped in broad daylight by a mob, the Rachakonda Police rescued a 24-year-old dental surgeon from the owner of a chain of tea shops who had abducted her.

The woman was taken back to her house where she was said to be in shock and was being counselled.

“We have so far made 32 arrests and the hunt for the main accused is going on,” DCP LB Nagar Zone Sunpreet Singh told South First.

The 28-year-old businessman and Mr Tea franchise owner K Naveen Reddy was the leader of the mob.

The police have registered the case under 10 IPC sections, including, 362 (abduction), 452 (house trespass) and 307 (attempt to murder).

Abducted before engagement

As per reports, Naveen and Vaishali were married about a year ago at a registrar’s office.

Although her parents knew about the marriage, they were seeking to get it dissolved and wanted her to marry someone else.

Reddy filed a civil case in the court against her parents which is still going on.

The mob had abducted the woman in broad daylight from her house in Turkayamjal, Adibatla, near Hyderabad.

The parents of the woman alleged that the mob, armed with sticks, also attacked her father and relatives, and vandalised their house.

She was abducted minutes before her engagement, the police said.

Members of the mob were caught on CCTV cameras damaging some parked vehicles.

The woman, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) graduate, had been working as a house surgeon.

The incident happened under the Adibatla police station limits under the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate.

The woman’s relatives had staged a protest on the Nagarjuna Sagar highway, resulting in a traffic jam.

They also set fire to a tea shop that is reportedly part of a chain owned by Naveen Reddy.

The protestors also raised slogans against the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Adibatla Police P Narender for his alleged negligence in the case.

Meanwhile, Rachakonda Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sudheer Babu told reporters that several teams have been formed to investigate different aspects of the case.

Asked how many members of the mob had been detained and whether Naveen Reddy had any criminal background, he said that sharing such information could hamper the investigation.

The mob attack

“Around 50-100 people came in and broke the CCTV cameras and other objects in the house. They beat up my husband, and held me and my daughter by the throat,” the victim’s mother told reporters.

She added that her daughter was dragged out of her room by force. “She pleaded with them not to touch her but they took her away in a car,” the mother said.

The victim’s father, Damodar Reddy, told reporters that his daughter had met the accused Naveen while playing badminton and was on friendly terms with him. However, when he proposed marriage through some mediators she rejected the proposal.

He added that the accused had been complaining about it to others while questioning the rejection.

Complained to police several times

The victim’s father said that the family had also complained to the Telangana Police’s SHE-teams division over Naveen Reddy harassing his daughter on the day of the Ganesha idol immersion this year.

He said the accused then sent politically influential persons as mediators.

“He held a grudge over this, and has abducted her now,” the father said, adding that there were around 20 relatives in the house when the incident happened.
