Telangana Congress swearing-in

AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge will set the ball rolling for the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana by addressing polling-booth-level agents at LB Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday, 25 January.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy discussed the programme with MLC-elect and TPCC vice-president B Mahesh Kumar Goud and asked him to take care of all arrangements.

Revanth Reddy is also expected to interact with the polling-booth-level agents and explain the strategies to be adopted for poll management.

He appealed to the agents to attend the meeting in large numbers. The meeting will begin at 2 pm and will continue till 5 pm on Thursday.

Target: 12 seats

The party leadership, which was impressed with the work done by the polling-booth-level agents, wants them to work with redoubled enthusiasm and help the party win a maximum number of Lok Sabha seats.

Kharge is expected to give them instructions and suggestions on how to go about their work in ensuring that the people vote for the Congress.

They will apparently be asked to propagate details of the welfare and development schemes into the midst of the people and sensitise them on the commitment the party has to serve them.

The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has been on an overdrive to capture at least 12 Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming elections.

Accordingly, it has drawn up plans to strengthen the party and take remedial measures in districts where its showing was poor in the 30 November Telangana Assembly elections.

Kharge’s visit is expected to consolidate the gains the party has made in the Assembly elections by energising the polling-booth-level agents, who play a critical role in making or marring a party’s prospects at the hustings.

Revanth Reddy has already held meetings with leaders of districts in the state to get a clear picture of the status of the party’s preparedness.

He discussed at length with them the strategies that are required to address the grey areas and make the party stronger.

Political equations

Though it may be of no consequence, the meeting of four BRS MLAs with Revanth Reddy on Tuesday raised eyebrows.

The meeting took place at a time when BRS and the Congress are going for each other’s necks and the Lok Sabha elections are just a couple of months away.

Though the MLAs later clarified that they called on Revanth Reddy for development works in their constituencies, the explanation sounded more like the usual refrain of MLAs after meeting the chief minister of a different party.

The MLAs said: “We met Revanth Reddy the way he meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” They added that there was nothing to be read into it.

Meanwhile, the Congress has stepped up efforts to find suitable candidates for the Lok Sabha seats in the state.

As it is the ruling party in the state and the tide seems to be flowing in its favour, the competition for the Congress tickets is quite acute now.
