AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday, 29 October, hauled the BRS government over coals for allegedly turning once-affluent Telangana into a pile of debt.

Kharge was addressing a street-corner meeting from the top of a Congress campaign vehicle in the Sangareddy district of the state when he made the statement.

The Telangana Assembly elections are slated to be held on 30 November, and campaigning for it — by all parties in the fray — are underway in full swing.

‘We make promises that we implement’

Speaking on Sunday during the Congress rally in Sangareddy, Kharge said: “Today the state is saddled with debts worth ₹5 lakh crore. At one time, there used to be no debt. After the BRS came to power nine years ago, there is nothing to talk about except a mountain of debt.”

The Congress leader said that his party had a track record of implementing all the promises that it made.

“In Telangana, we have made six promises and we will definitely implement them,” he said, adding: “It is under the Congress rule that Hyderabad got several public sector undertakings which provided employment to the youth in the area.”

He said that the Congress was the only party that really cared for the poor. It always came up with schemes and programmes that benefited the poorer sections and women, he said.

“In Karnataka, travel in state-owned transport corporation bus is free for women,” he said, pointing to one of the pre-poll promises that the Congress implemented there after coming to power in May.

Kharge said that he was ready to fix a bus for the BRS leaders to visit Karnataka and see for themselves whether the Congress government there was implementing the five guarantees as promised.

“We make promises that we implement. But you make promises and forget about them,” he told the BRS.

He asked the BRS government as to what has happened to its promise of providing 2 lakh jobs every year. “This way, you should have provided 18 lakh jobs during the last nine years. Have you?” he asked.

‘Guarantees will change lives of poorest’

Training his guns at the BJP dispensation at the Centre, he said that only corporates benefited under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the last nine years, only Adani’s income had doubled, he said, adding that the BRS in the state was working as BJP’s B-team.

Though there are 3 lakh posts vacant in the Central government, they have not yet been filled, said Kharge.

He said that the BJP came to power promising jobs to 2 crore people every year and ₹15 lakh in the bank accounts of the poor, but it conveniently forgot about the promises.

Earlier, in a message on platform X, he said that “Bangaru Telangana” — the dream of the Congress — would be fulfilled.

“Our six guarantees shall change the lives of the poorest. We deliver what we promise. Do not fall into the propaganda of the BRS and the BJP. We promised five guarantees in Karnataka, people are getting benefited by four of them. The remaining one will be implemented soon. We shall deliver in Telangana too,” he said.
