BRS working president and Telangana Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao on Saturday, 28 October, pooh-poohed the announcement made by the Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah that a leader from the Backward Classes (BC) would be made chief minister of the state if the saffron party was voted to power in the upcoming Assembly elections.

His remarks in Hyderabad came a day after Shah, during a public meeting in Suryapet, declared that a leader from the BC community would be made chief minister if the BJP was voted to power in the 30 November Assembly elections.

‘Why was Bandi Sanjay replaced?’

He sought to know why the BJP abruptly replaced Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who is from the BC community, as the Telangana BJP president, and recalled that the NDA government at the Centre had yet to agree to the demand of setting up a separate OBC Welfare Ministry.

“We have been requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set up the ministry since 2014, but nothing concrete has been done till date,” KTR told reporters in Hyderabad.

Recalling that the state Assembly not only passed a resolution requesting the Central government to establish an OBC Ministry but also made a similar demand at the BRS plenary, Rao said the Union government simply ignored it.

He sought to know whether the condition of BCs changed in the country after Modi, who hails from the OBC community, became the prime minister in 2014.

“Have all the STs and women in the country benefited after Droupadi Murmu, who belongs to ST, became the President of India?” he asked.

He added that it was wrong to believe that an entire community would benefit if a person from that particular community became either a prime minister or a chief minister.

Medigadda barrage contreversy

To a question on the controversy over the partial sinking of pillars of the Medigadda barrage a few days ago, Rao said he could not get an opportunity to speak to officials concerned about the project.

To another question on the recent visit of officials from the National Dam Safety Authority, he replied that a report from them was still awaited.

Rao further stated that the agency concerned, which completed the construction of the barrage, would bear the cost of carrying out necessary works, and there would not be any burden on the State exchequer.

When his attention was drawn towards the criticism made by the Congress on the barrage issue, Rao slammed the former saying that the people faced several problems because of the Congress misrule and slammed that the Congress fit was to be dumped in a garbage bin.

‘Never indulged in revenge politics’

To another question, he said like in Andhra Pradesh, the ruling BRS never indulged in revenge politics.

“Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president A Revanth Reddy could have been in jail in a cash for vote scam if we do same politics like AP,” he said, adding that there was no curfew and drought during the last nine and a half years in the state.

Referring to remarks that farmers from Karnataka were sponsored and brought to Telangana to explain the problems being faced, Rao said: “Let us visit Karnataka to know the ground reality.”

He criticised the Congress government in Karnataka for failing to supply power for five hours.

Taking a swipe at Congress, Rama Rao said Mahatma Gandhi had favoured disbanding the grand old party post-independence. “Unfortunately, it’s still there, therefore, a lot of nuisance.”
