Telangana Chief Minister and BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao at a rally in the state on Friday, 27 October, 2023.

Telangana Chief Minister and BRS supremo K Chandrashekar Rao on Friday, 27 October, warned voters that the Congress would wind up all welfare schemes — including Rythu Bandhu and free power supply to the farm sector — if it came to power in the state.

The chief minister, addressing election rallies at Palair and Wardhannapet on Friday, hauled the Congress over coals for trying to come to power allegedly by hook or crook to hoodwink the people.

Referring to Rythu Bandhu, he said he was certain the Congress would scrap the scheme that was helping farmers to a great extent.

It was a scheme which Dr MS Swaminathan praised, he said, adding that even the UN commended the state for the farmer-friendly scheme.

The chief minister said that Congress leader Uttam Kumar Reddy showed his true colours by saying that Rythu Bandhu was a waste of public money while Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Revanth Reddy said three hours of power supply was enough for farmers.

He said if the BRS was voted to power again in the state, all 93 lakh BPL families in Telangana would be provided fine rice and health insurance, which are part of the party’s manifesto.

Blasting Thummala

At Palair, KCR did not hide his displeasure at former minister Thummala Nageswara Rao, who left the BRS for the Congress, for targeting him.

He said he wanted the people to know who had done injustice to whom — whether it was Thummala to the BRS or vice-versa.

As Thummala is tipped to be Congress candidate for Palair, the chief minister said that when Thummala lost the election in 2014, he took pity on him and made him a minster, and then nominated him to the Legislative Council.

“When Palair MLA Venkat Reddy passed away, I initially wanted to field his wife. But on Thummala’s request, I nominated him for the seat in the by-election and ensured his victory. I made Thummala the ‘ruler’ for the entire Khammam district. And what did he give the BRS in return? He lost all but one seat in the next election,” he said.

He said Thummala, forgetting the lift the BRS had given him in politics, was biting the hand that fed him. “It is not called politics. Everyone should defeat such politics,” he said. “You have a good legislator in K Upender Reddy. Ensure him a grand victory.”

Promises galore

He said that it was on account of the BRS government that the Palair constituency had witnessed development.

“Those who praised me for the development have no changed the tack. They might change their version but truth remains unchanged. It is there before all of you to see,” he said.

At Wardhannapet, he allayed the fears of those who were under the impression that the government was going to acquire their lands for the construction of a ring road. He came down heavily on those who were spreading the rumour.

“It is a blatant lie. There is no such proposal before the government,” he said, adding that the state government would develop Wardhannapet at a cost of ₹160 crore.
