BRS chief and former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao underwent hip replacement surgery at a private hospital in Hyderabad on Friday, 8 December.

The surgery came hours after he suffered a fall in the bathroom at his farmhouse at Erravalli in the Siddipet district in the early hours of Friday.

Soon after the fall, KCR was moved to Yashoda Hospital in Somajiguda in Hyderabad — the administration and the police created a “green corridor” for his ambulance — where doctors reportedly found that he had fractured his hip bone.

According to sources South First reached out to, the former chief minister appeared to have lost balance after he went inside the bathroom.

Following a series of medical tests, doctors recommended a hip replacement surgery, which he underwent on Friday evening.

Hospital bulletins

The hospital, in a bulletin released after KCR underwent surgery, gave details of the procedure and his condition.

It said he had “undergone the planned operation of left total hip replacement”, with the surgery being performed by the hospital’s team of senior orthopaedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses.

The hospital added in the bulletin: “He has tolerated the surgery well and was stable haemodynamically throughout the procedure.”

It also said that KCR was currently recuperating in his room, adding that “The usual course of recovery is expected to be six to eight weeks.”

It also said: “He is receiving routine post-operative care, including IV fluids, prophylactic antibiotics, and pain medication.”

The plan for ambulation, physiotherapy, and nutrition would be designed based on his assessment on Saturday, said the hospital.

According to an earlier health bulletin issued by the hospital superintendent: “On evaluation, including CT scans, he was found to have left Hip fracture [Intracapsular Neck of femur fracture]. He would require left hip replacement for the same and the usual course of recovery for such cases is expected to be six to eight weeks.”

The bulletin further said: “He is being constantly monitored by a multi-disciplinary team including Orthopaedic, Anaesthesia, General Medicine, and Pain Medicine. His general condition is stable.”

There was a fracture in the hip and left leg, a hospital official told South First.

Leaders express concern

KCR demitted office as the chief minister after the Congress won the recently-held Assembly elections, and drove to his farmhouse on 3 December, the day the results were declared.

He has been there ever since, receiving visitors and reviewing what went wrong in the elections with party leaders. He also received a number of visitors from his native Chintamadaka village in the Siddipet district.

Meanwhile, on the instructions of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the secretary of the Department of Health, Medical & Family Welfare visited Yashoda hospital to inquire about KCR’s health and interact with the team of doctors treating him.

According to a press note issued: “The secretary, HM&FW Department, on behalf of Hon’ble Chief Minister, Telangana, conveyed to the management of the hospital that the best care should be provided to the former chief minister during the course of his hospitalisation.

“Following his visit to the hospital, secretary, HM&FW Department, briefed Hon’ble Chief Minister who directed him to continue to monitor the treatment of former chief minister closely and keep him updated.”

PM wishes KCR speedy recovery

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the leaders who wished the former Telangana chief minister a speedy recovery after his fall.
