Telangana Assembly elections KCR

Telangana Chief Minister and BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao on Sunday, 29 October, came down heavily on Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief DK Shivakumar for claiming that the Congress government was providing five hours of power to farmers.

Addressing an election rally in Kodad, the chief minister said Shivakumar showed no “shame” when making the observation in Telangana, where the government was supplying power to the farm sector round the clock.

“Does he have any sense of shame? Does he know that we are providing a 24-hour power supply? Is he in his senses?” he asked.

The Telangana chief minister said that the Congress had given a “gift” of a five-hour power supply to the farmers after they trusted the party and elected it to power.

“The same scene will repeat here if you vote for the Congress. Do you want a power supply for five hours or 24 hours?” he asked the gathering.

KCR said that not even once had a curfew been imposed in the state during the last 10 years. “We had no law and order problem. No drought, either. Only this year did the Nagarjuna Sagar not fill up. We had ample rain the rest of the years,” he said.

“We are moving forward with a new sense of confidence. Now the Congress leaders arrive and promise a five-hour power supply, not knowing that we are supply power round the clock,” he said.

Recalling 2021

KCR recalled the days in 2001 when he raised his voice against the injustice meted out to Telangana when it came to using water from the Nagarjuna Sagar Project.

“I asked the then rulers why farmers in Telangana had to pay a cess for the water that flowed in the left canal, and why those in Andhra were allowed to draw water free from the right canal. Could there be two different sets of guidelines for drawing water from the canals which originate from the same project?” he asked.

He also lashed out at Telangana’s Congress Legislature Party leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka for saying that he could not see water from the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project anywhere in Kodad.

“He is in a responsible position. He should not talk without knowing the facts. I want the farmers of Nadiguda, Mothe, and Munagala to confirm whether they have got Kaleshwaram water. My concern is that the other areas also should get water. I will ensure that you get water from the Sriram Sagar Project,” said KCR.

“In future, if crops were to grow in the Nalgonda district, it would not be possible with the Congress. They are incapable of doing anything. Had the Congress been in power, could Kaleshwaram have been possible? It will be the BRS government which will get projects that end the irrigation problems once and for all,” he said.

Fight for Godavari waters

Addressing another rally in the Thugaturthy Assembly segment, he said that the people in the area were used to fighting for what was due to them.

They had fought relentless battles for Godavari waters, but the rulers of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh never bothered about their needs, he claimed.

“That is why I advise you to use extreme caution while exercising your franchise. If you don’t act with wisdom, it is you who are going to lose the election,” he said.

He said that before he founded the TRS (now the BRS), no one ever gave voice to the suffering of the people. If anyone did, they would have been branded a Naxalite and dumped in jail, he claimed.

“Though we fought, the Congress, which was in power at the Centre then, did not show any mercy on the people. It refused to honour the sentiment of the people for Telangana state,” he said.

KCR said that the Congress created a separate state only after he went on a hunger strike. “It was then that the Congress capitulated and ceded Telangana. The Congress leaders should hang their heads in shame for saying that they had gifted Telangana. No one has forgotten how many cases were registered against Telangana activists,” he said.

Taking on Yogi Adityanath

KCR also hit out at his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath, saying he was coming to Telangana and preaching lessons when there was no food guarantee for people in his own state.

“Several great people are descending in the state. One chief minister from Uttar Pradesh, wearing a lungi, will come here. There is no food guarantee in his state.

“He comes here and teaches us lessons. Agriculture labourers from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Bengal are coming to Telangana for work. They are coming here for livelihood. Those chief ministers are teaching us lessons. I don’t understand what I should say about it,” Rao said, hitting out at Adityanath.

KCR said the state had been progressing and had become number one in several parameters such as per capita income and power.
