Telangana Chief Minister and BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao on the campaign trail on Wednesday, 1 November, 2023.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) said that if the Congress somehow won the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections, thugs would be born again and it would be like a big swallowing snake in the game of “Kailasam” (snakes and ladders).

Addressing a public meeting as part of the BRS’ election campaign in Nirmal on Thursday, 2 November, KCR said that the Rythu Bandhu scheme was his brainchild.

He said he had introduced it for the benefit of farmers, and that the Congress had been constantly making unnecessary remarks against it.

Claiming that his government waived farmers’ loans, the chief minister said he took strong exception to the remarks made by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president A Revanth Reddy on the Rythu Bandhu scheme.

Revanth had said that KCR was giving alms to farmers in the name of Rythu Bandhu. “Do farmers look like beggars?” asked KCR.

‘Transformed farmers’ lives’

“In united Andhra Pradesh, farmers faced difficult times and there was a situation when repairs to the transformers were carried out only after paying bribes to the staff concerned,” said KCR.

“The situation has now changed completely with the farmers getting continuous power supply,” said KCR.

“As many as 15 substations have been constructed in Nirmal constituency in addition to hundreds of transformers installed elsewhere in the state,” he added.

“The 24-hour power supply has enabled farmers to attend to their agriculture works round-the-clock,” said KCR.

KCR said that before the formation of Telangana, the state faced droughts, migrations, and a shortage of drinking water.

“We thought about what we must do to make villages green and decided to stabilise agriculture,” he said.

‘Scheme not meant for polls’

KCR said the Rythu Bandhu scheme was not meant as a populist measure to benefit them in elections.

“No one asked me and not even an application was submitted. No one did dharna. We thought about it and came up with the scheme as an investment for farmers,” KCR said.

He added that the BRS government has been giving free/subsidised water and electricity to farmers.

The state government has been buying the crop from farmers even if there is a loss, said KCR, adding that smiles have been brought back on the faces of farmers by introducing various schemes aimed at benefiting them.

While addressing another public meeting, in Jagtial constituency, KCR asked the people to observe the changes that have taken place after the BRS came to power.

“The Union government asked Telangana to ensure that the farmers fix meters to their electric pump sets but I did not budge and did not allow fixing of these meters in the interest of farmers,” claimed KCR.
