Ending months of speculation on whether the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) might go in for early polls in the state, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Tuesday, 15 November, made it clear that he had no intention of advancing the elections to the Assembly.

Elaborating on his plans — for facing the elections by the end of next year, as scheduled — at a joint meeting of the TRS’ executive, legislature, and parliamentary party, at Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad, the chief minister asked MLAs and ministers to spend most of their time back in their constituencies, preparing the party apparatus for the elections.

KCR is understood to have told the party leaders and MLAs to get ready for the elections right now. He told them they should be in the midst of the people always.

They would have to create awareness among people about the welfare schemes that the TRS government was implementing in the state, he added.

KCR spells out roles for MLAs, ministers, leaders

Sources said that the chief minister expressed confidence in winning the next elections hands down, and that all the survey results were in favour of the TRS.

KCR reportedly said that the TRS would score a hattrick [in winning Assembly elections in Telangana], and there could be no doubt about it.

The chief minister wanted a foolproof action plan for every constituency, and called for efforts to be made to repeat the Munugode result in each segment.

In another key announcement, he said he had no intention of dropping any MLA, and that all of them would be renominated.

He, however, told them that they would have to earn their renomination by preparing the party for the elections in their constituencies.

The TRS chief asked the ministers to take the responsibility of helping at least one MLA besides taking care of their own prospects.

He wanted one in charge for every 100 voters so that there would be no communication gap in conveying the message of the party to the voters on welfare schemes.

He asked the ministers to find out the status of the party apparatus in each constituency in their districts, and if there were any grey areas that needed to be addressed, they should be brought to his notice immediately.

Plans to counter BJP

Referring to the BJP becoming more and more aggressive, he said that it may not be difficult for the TRS to stop the saffron party in its tracks. He said the BJP was stooping to despicable levels to gain the political upper hand over the TRS.

Referring to the Aziznagar farmhouse scandal, aka the Cash for MLAs case, KCR reportedly said that the BJP was trying to topple governments, but when it tried to execute its plan in Telangana, the attempt blew up in its faces.

The law would take its course in the case and no one need be afraid of the CBI or ED raids, said KCR, adding that TRS workers should not be scared but fight against the BJP.

He also said TRS MLAs and ministers, for their party’s sake, should be careful about how they conduct themselves and not give any scope to the saffron party to point fingers at them.

For the last few months, there has been a buzz in the TRS circles that the chief minister might prefer snap polls, but it has now been clarified that the elections would be held as scheduled.

The buzz became more importunate in the wake of the stifling atmosphere prevailing in the state with the BJP becoming more aggressive and bearing down on the TRS with an intent to capture power in Telangana.

The humiliation that it suffered in Munugode made the BJP more ravenous and ferocious to obtain an upper hand going forward.

The raids by the ED and the Income Tax (I-T) sleuths on TRS leaders’ residences and the offices of businessmen close to the TRS leaders are being seen as an indication of the BJP’s renewed offensive against the TRS.

The chief minister’s assertion that he was not in favour of early polls should calm the nerves of the TRS leaders as some of them were wondering if the BJP had already made any dent in the TRS monolith. Though the TRS had won the Munugode by-election, it was more a pyrrhic victory as it could pick up the seat only after deploying the entire might of the party and its resources, and yet the BJP was not very far from it when the TRS crossed the finish line.
