Kavitha reacts sharply to Kishan’s jibe on poor representation to women in BRS ticket allotment

With an overwhelming majority in Parliament, why didn't the BJP pass a law reserving 33% seats for women, Kavitha asked.

BRS MLC K Kavitha on Tuesday, 22 August, reacted sharply to Union Minister G Kishan Reddy’s derisive remarks that the BRS had failed to give enough representation to women in the allotment of tickets for the upcoming Assembly elections — although the “golden family” (implying Kavitha) had protested at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to press for a Bill reserving 33 percent of Parliament seats for women.

In a strongly worded tweet, Kavitha said Kishan Reddy’s concern for women’s rights was astonishing but “welcoming, if that’s how he personally feels about it”.

“Finally, someone from BJP has at least acknowledged this long-pending demand,” she said, lacing her words in sarcasm.

Takes jibe at BJP

She said: “Kishan Anna, with an overwhelming majority in Parliament, BJP can table and pass any Bill. Your party has refused to even entertain its two-time manifesto promise of the Women’s Reservation Bill.

“Speaking of ticket distribution by the BRS party, we understand your frustration and confusion. You are waiting to poach candidates who did not get the tickets. Please don’t link your political insecurities to women’s representation.

She said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is of the opinion that without a law in place — as there is for local bodies, which has given representation to 14 lakh women — it is not possible to implement 33 percent representation at the Parliament and Assembly levels.

“CM KCR Garu has proposed a formula to increase the number of seats in Parliament and reserve 1/3rd of them for women leaders. BRS Party does not sell Jumlas like the BJP, @kishanreddy Garu.”

She said she would like to hear his opinion on the issue of women’s representation and see what the BJP, the Congress, and other parties have to offer to the women of Telangana when it comes to the matter of ticket distribution.

“Politicising a structural flaw will only expose the intent of all the political parties that represent the aspirations of the people of the country that are never fulfilled, especially by a party that has been boasting about its thumping majority but does nothing to give women equal space in political discourse,” she said.

‘Trying to split anti-MIM vote’

Earlier, Kishan Reddy tweeted: “Bangaru Kutumbam Family members created drama in Jantar Mantar demanding for 33% reservation for women in Parliament. In Bangaru Kutumbam Mathematics 33% reservation led to 6 seats (3+3= 6) being given for women by the BRS party this time.”

“In his desperation to get the communal AIMIM to win, KCR is trying to split the anti-MIM vote by fielding candidates on the instructions of the Majlis party that will further help its cause,” he said.

He said that by repeating a majority of MLAs, KCR had conceded that in a losing election, his only option was to rely on the money power of his MLAs who had amassed massive wealth through land grabbing and other illegal activities in the last five years.
